Returning to the U.K. with my Belingo-Help needed
Messages 1 to 6 of 6.
So my loverly Belingo...I need lots of advice... one being it is still on finance...I will continue to pay for it as it is so much cheaper than buying back in the uk It is in my ex-husbands name will I still be able to travel through Europe and not have any bother...especially when i travel into the uk I Hear u have 6 mths until you have to re matriculate it, it is a left hand drive. Will I still be able to do so even on finance? I will be wanting to run a laptop, ipod, and re-charge mobile phones. I am guessing i will be using the laptop and ipod with speakers while the belingo is stationary...The last thing I need is to be stuck 20 km away from the nearest town on a beautiful sandy beach with a flat battery...dangerous. So what do you advise we buy to stop the drain...nothing expensive ...doing the trip on a shoe string...should i buy a spare battery ..just in case?...rather have a gagit...But safety comes first. thanks for any help. Trisha
Anyway the battery drain question, there's a couple of ways of approaching as well I this one but by far the cheapest would be a voltage drop device inline between the cigar lighter socket and your laptop so that when the voltage drops below a certain level it simply cuts the supply to it thus the battery doesnt go flat. The second is to have a secondary battery but really for it to remain effective it would need some form of connection to the main battery to give it a top up charge when the engine is running. If the battery is just to last the one trip then a simple connection to it via a couple of crock clips onto the terminals to what ever youy are powering will probably do. Phones and Ipod wont create much of a drain on the main car battery so it's really the laptop thats the energy guzzler. If the car is a spanish model then it will possibly need some mods to make it suitable for uk suitability. RHD headlamps spring to mind for starters and the rear foglight must light up on the offside rather than the nearside or both of them. Not sure about Portugal but in Spain I think you need registration document(s)and your passport as ID and go to your local police station for further advice on this one. Not sure about the finance but as long as your X is paying the finance company I dont see why you cant export it. ___________________ THERE'S NO REPLACEMENT FOR DISPLACEMENT !
Now is my dilemma do i buy a laptop, when i sell my computers! Thanks again for the advice.
when uoi get to the uk, whilst you are still running on the Spanish plates you will need just to attach headlamp beam deflectors. But to pass patriate the car you will need to replace the headlamps and the rear lights. Breakers, e-bay etc will help with this. You will also need to check your insurance status, and that your ex or you have covered the vehicle for traveling in all the countrys with as you say alot of valuble items, especially as you do not have a mailing address. Alot of forthought is required for this trip, but I hope you have a great time, sounds a wonderfull drive Al ___________________ if it aint broke don't fix it !
i am not traveling till october, so i have time to double check my travel details carefully, Does that mean i have to have my lights changed over as soon as i arrive in Dover or portsmouth? Will go into my insurance tomorrow and check for the extra price. thanks x
As far as am aware the lights will not need replacing until you UK regester the car, until then you will be like any other tourist so headlamp converters will be the only immediate neccesity . Suggest you check with HM R&C on this. My Buick came from the US but I had an importer agent deal with all of this for me, they cleared customs and delivered the car to me and then all I had to do was the light converson MOT and regestration for my self. However when you do regester it you will need all your documents in YOUR NAME and you will be liable for payment of import tax/VAT. Transfer to a UK insurance company will also be required. They will charge an extra premium as the car is LHD. It will also require an MOT test where the lights etc will be required to meet UK regulations. You may also need to de regester it with the spanish authorities etc. you will need to check with their customs also. Hope i've guided you a little Al ___________________ if it aint broke don't fix it !
