It would appear that the mgzr range of cars has a problem.Just recently
my exhaust started to get louder so i took it to my local tyre and exhaust
place who put it up on the lift for examination. The fitter found that the
exhaust gasses were escaping from the top of the cat but it was not a
serious leak,i asked how much for a new cat converter and was quoted
£300.76p. I said thank you, then left. I then decided to buy one of those
exhaust bandage things from Hal*0%d$ and fit that.Everything was ok
for about a month then the noise came back again but louder.I took my
car to another tyre/exhaust place who put it up on the lift and had a good
look, he couldn`t tell exactly where the leak was coming from but it was
definitely from the top of the cat. Anyway to cut a long story short i took my car back to them the next day and they removed the cat converter.
The fitter said that the weld on top of the converter had a big long split
all the way along it from front to back and apart from that there was nothing else wrong with it and he has seen this problem on another zr
a couple of years ago.I went into bob the builder mode and asked him
if he could fix it and he said yes we can.He welded a plate over the split
charged me £100 and now it`s ok.What do you think ???
Apparently it was a design fault with this car.

If the weld holds for say... about another year or so then yeah you've scored a watch so to speak.

Thanks LB. I Don`t do much mileage in my car as my job is only 10 mins
walk from where i live (lucky me not). Just a bit annoyed that it took only
31k for the problem to show on a 4 yr old car which is almost in mint condition
apart from a few stone chips at the front.

Sounds a bit steep to me for a welded plate, but the original weld must have been a different grade of steel to crack like that and obviously as a batch of units made, anyone doing higher mileage and it would have shown up much earlier
