Hi there - I wonder if you can help please? The steering warning light came on a few days ago but couldn't feel any change to the steering. The garage said I would probably need a new steering colomn but reset the warning light and advised me to wait and see. Well the light returned and today the steering suddenly felt very heavy. Is the car safe to drive to the garage or should I get it towed?
Thank you

Hi there, I've got a Sept 2004 Panda, and the same thing happened to me about 2 weeks ago, the steering warning light went out on its own when the Recovery Vehicle arrived, and the steering was back to normal, so I cancelled the garage appointment, and thought all was OK. On 18 July, it happened again, and I had to drive to somewhere safe to call the recovery people. Just as I was turning a corner (with great difficulty as the steering was so hard), the steering went to "City" mode (which is very very light), and I was very lucky that I didn't crash the car. Be very careful if you do drive it, also, I've just had the call from the repair garage and a new steering shaft, which they say I need, is very very expensive, and I don't know whether driving the car with "hard" steering did more damage. It might be best to phone the garage for advice.
Hope this helps.

PPS - see the message in Fiat Forums "what are the garage talking about" dated 30/12/07, at least I'll be more armed with questions for the garage when I pick up and pay for my car!!
