I have bought a 1998 216 cabriolet as a non runner. It apparently died while being driven then reluctantly restarted before dying completely. RAC recovered as unable to trace fault with previous owner changing rotor arm and distributor cap before giving up.

Fitting a spark plug directly to the ht lead from the coil produces a spark on cranking so I presume ecu and crank sensor are functioning, however I get no spark on any leads from the distributor.

I am wondering if the previous owner may somehow have obtained the wrong arm or cap.

Any ideas would be appreciated.......TONY.

Yep, I've seen brand new rotors that are faulty try another cap and rotor, particularly the rotor

Hi Tony.
Does the rotor arm turn when you crank the engine. If not I would say that the timing belt has either broken or lost teeth.
It would also be worth checking that the timing belt has not slipped and put the timing out.
As LB has said it could also be a faulty arm or cap.
Good luck.

Thanks for the input guys. The rotor arm is turning ok and although I haven't checked cambelt or valve timing yet I presume that would not prevent me getting a spark but simply provide one at the wrong time? Anyway will be checking that tomorrow hopefully with a new cap and rotor arm as well. Will keep you posted....Tony.

Hi.
I think it could just happen that if the rotor arm was between contacts of the cap when the coil fires you may not get a spark. That was my thought on ignition timing.
One other thought, is the coil ht lead plugged into the correct place on the distributor cap? Sounds a silly question but I have learned never to assume anything.
Good luck.
MikeF.

Thanks for the help guys. It turned out to be the coil.....athough I was getting a spark it wasn't strong enough. An interesting point however is that the visible spark from the main ht lead to the head appeared the same on the replacement coil (orange colour rather than bluey white) as the faulty one so I really wasn't expecting a result when I turned the key, almost had to check somebody hadn't started the car next to me!
Deep Joy....Tony.

Guess what.....its gone again. A friend (my boss) borrowed the car and it simply stopped while he was unlocking the gates to our yard. It will not fire at all. Suspecting the used coil I had fitted may have expired I forked out 40 quid for a new one but still it will not fire. I've got fuel, ive got a spark, i've got a headache......why wont it go??

Have you checked for a break in the wiring to the injectors. Do the plugs get wet with fuel?

Is it possible that there is some water in the fuel tank? That problem had me scratching my head for a few days on a Metro.
A faulty seal on the filler cap was to blame.
Normally it would only cut out when the fuel level was low.
Good luck.

Once again thanks for the input guys......having spent 5 hours checking timing, various sensors, earth leads etc I looked at what it couldn't possibly be, dizzy cap and rotor arm, which were both brand new. Hey presto, bursts into life......cap was ok but the rotor arm which I fitted last week and also the one the previous owner fitted trying to resolve the problem are both knackered. A point of interest which is confusing me somewhat, using a digital multimeter I checked resistance on all three rotors. The one that came on the car showed around 9k ohms, the one that worked for a week showed 900 ohms and the one I just bought has such a high resistance that I had to set the meter to the 20 megohm range just to get a reading.....and the reading it gave was constantly falling. Cheers everybody.
