Processor core speeds are constantly on the up, and now the number of processor cores are increasing as well ! I've had a dual core system now for about 8 months based on an Intel processor, as the price of Quad cores is now within my reach i am thinking of upgrading again.

My problem is i really dont belive that you get the implied performance of 4 cores running at 2.4 Ghz giving a combined clock speed of 9.6Ghz ! is this a realistic appraisal of performance or am i just being conned out of more money ?

So can anyone answere the question which gives the better performance

a single core 3.2Ghz,? a quad core with each core running at 2.4 Ghz,? or somthing inbetween with a dual core ? i intend having 4 Gb ram and where possible 1 Gb 16 x PCI-E card.

I use the machine for heavy gaming, including online gaming so its got to be able to hold its own.

If anyone has any opinions i would love to hear them.

I have just found an article claiming that INTEL's quad core is basically 2 duals melted together, whereas AMD have redisigned their quad core from scratch. Having owned both intel and amd's in the past i have always found intels to be more stable and less prone to random crash events, so it would be good to hear from anyone who has an opinion on which is the better architecture as well.

I find 'Micro Mart' a good mag for the information you need.I am on a single core but have been advised to take the dual core route. The main advantage of using dual core is the heat factor of the cpu.
That is much as I can help

Unless you are into hard core gaming a duel core is fast enough, after what Intel did to AMD I will stay with AMD they run cooler but 2 cores dont mean double speed IIRC its about 80% speed increase on single cores, you can run more programs at once than single core can, also most duel cores plus come with larger main memory ie 2 gigabyte plus which helps speed things up

I think from new processor coming next year AMD will catch Intel up with a bang, will look forward to that hehehe

Wouldnt touch Intel if my life depended on it! AMD all the way here, we build our own systems and he is a pc tech, tons of problems with intel rarely any issues with AMD's, he is still on the dual core atm and is into hardcore gaming.
