Hi, my first post so I'm hoping somebody can help me out.....

I have a 214SLi on a J plate and she's been pretty good.... up until now.
The car is not starting too well and when she does there seems to be a problem whilst running.
When revving there seems to be flat spot at about 1500 until 2500, then when trying to drive, the problem is really apparent in 1st gear. 2nd is also a problem but she runs fine in the other gears.
Had the Air Filter assembly off and there doesn't seem too much wrong, however the 2 vacuum pipes that attach to the thermac (?!?!) switch have seen better days, can these be bought seperately or do I have to buy the entire switch assembly? Where can I find such a switch? The Haynes manual refers to it as a thermac switch, is there another name for it? Could this be the problem? To be honest I doubt they are the main cause as they look like they have been poor for a while.
The engine also sounds a little "meaty", not sure if that is related?
Thinking of changing the plugs and leads but I'm not sure if this will cure the problem or not.

Anybody have any ideas?

Hi Swanster.
The Thermac switch is used to drive a vacuum activated flap to allow hot air from around the exhaust manifold into the inlet manifold. This switch only allows vacuum to pass when the air temperature is low. ( I think thats the right way round).
If these pipes are split, it will allow air into the inlet manifold and could well cause problems similar to yours.
A code read of the ECU may well be the next step to avoid guessing, but of course make sure the basics are correct first, eg. pipes, plugs, rotor arm, and leads.
Good luck.
