Hi, are there any Cavalier breeders or owners who can give me some advice on neutering. I have an 18 week old male pup who may need to be aneasthetised next week as he is drooling and if hes no better the vet will need to get a good look inside his mouth. The vet has suggested castrating him while he is under but i have heard it can make there coats really untidy and unmanageable. The vet says this is absolute rubbish but i have heard it from a few places. If anyone can give me any advice at all i would really appreciate it as i need to make a decision in the next day or two, i dont know any other cavalier owners to ask and im new to the breed.

heya yeh i have a cavie too. a little tri bitch :) also as mad as a hatter but a real love bug.. such a mummies girl too lol. as for neuter he is 18weeks and goes uing you saynder next week. personally i wld say no. anyou good vet wouldnt neuter under the age of 6 months. none of the vets i have known will do it under that age. neutering him young wont hurt him in any way (i dont think anyways) but personally i wouldnt even do it before one year old but 6 months would be my absolute minimal tbh. as for the coat i know people that show have told me they will never neuter a show cavie because it dulls the coat and make it dense . i have never personally seen this but i do know a cavie who is 6 years old neutered and has a very heavy coat they they have to clip often because it becomes unmanagable but to be honest i really dont know. maybe someone on a forum has had their cavalier neutered and can answer for you. my girl isnt neutered so wouldnt really knoe. but with the age thing i would definatly wait

your boy is mega cute. look forward to more pics :)

whats wrong with his mouth anyways? is it saliva glands??
i know a kid (human) who had a problem with that small op fixed it in no time :)

heres my girl angel .... took this yesterday also hard to get a good picci as she never stops moving lol this picci she is walking in so ya cant pic up her features right but its still gorgeous :)

thanks kitty i think im gonna say no to neutering ive done a bit of research and it seems it would be best to wait. As for the op im hoping hes not gonna need it as he doesnt seem as bad today, hes been drooling loads in his sleep but is otherwise well ive never seen anything like it. The vet says it could be his teeth bothering him as he is teething but if hes no better in a couple of days they'll put him under for a closer look (he is too soft and wouldnt let them look yesterday).lol. If anyone has a neutered male cav id still be really interested in your opinion. thanks again. Your Angel is lovely Kitty she looks really petite i hope Alfie is gonna be small but i didnt get him from the breeder and didnt see his parents so i dont have anything to go on ill just have to wait and see.

I have 2 Cavs both neutered at 6 months old. There coats are fine. I think Black/tans have very heavy coats(mine does and his father does too). Seems a bit harsh to castrate at such a young age.Can you not ask the breeder about the drooling? Some vets are a bit quick to find problems with pets to make money

i got angel from a kennel and we had her delivered. i only picked her from a photo but it is a registered kennel but that mean i didnt see her parents were guessing they must be small because angel is smaller than some chihuahuas weighing in at under 5kg lol were breeding her with a 4.5kg male so her babies wont be to big for her :)
with angel she was tiiiiny when we got her but we figured all cavs must be that small as pups it wasnt till she got older we realised she was a teeny :) my chihuahua is far from a teeny lol

heres angel sunbathing lol

thanks shell so far this morning he hasnt drooled so im hoping its a one off it was quite a lot though but only in his sleep. Im used to drool cos i used to have boxers and ive got mastiffs and great danes in the family we all walk round with kitchen roll when we visit so we can wipe their mouths lol, and the only time they dont drool is in their sleep so its very puzzling. I always tend to panic and rush straight to the vets and i know what you mean about the money :-/ I didnt get him from the breeder but i have his KC and that has their address on so i might try them thanks again.

Aw it'll be lovely having little cavalier puppies to look after but really hard to let them go. They're sooo cute when they're babies. Will you not be tempted to keep them?

My 2 Cavaliers are aged 10 and 7 years. They are both castrated have gorgeous silky coats and are the pefect weight. Just enough to cover their ribs. My older one has a heart murmur too but htis is a genetic fault with the breed. I do believe that food plays a big part in good health. I always castrate my boys and have never had a problem with fatness or scurfy coats
