I have a daughter who is dyslexic. Shes not been formally diagnosed, but i know that she is. Our school was rubbish and refused to teach her in the methods i suggested, so she really lagged behind for a year. Luckily she then moved up a class to an understanding teacher (with a child of their own, i might add...!) who took what i suggested along with his own ideas and shes now rushed to the head of the class! She used to say she was stupid and was teased, but it has nothing to do with intelligence - they cant even see letters in the right place on the page so no wonder they cant read the words?! Now shes found a method which suits her, shes flying!
Unfortunately shes starting a new class after school hols - so here we go again with the teachers!
Another one in their 20's with no kids and does everything as suggested in the book at teacher training college..! GRR!

Hi, same here, son is dyslexic, adhd - albeit borderline, glucose intolerant....14 and with attitude, and a left handed highly intelligent, lazy daughter with attitude! I always say she is left handed because it is a disability, you would be surprised at her lofty age of 12, how many arguements I have had with schools/teachers about left handed scissors and the 20th century - they will only provide right handed scissors because of cost and the child has to learn a really cak handed way of using them....rant over!

Nobby, is your daughter going into secondary school? If she is make sure you make yourself known to the SENCO, as long as they know that you are a parent that wants the best for your child they will actually try to help! Even in primary find out who the SENCO is, and make a nuisance of yourself......that bit may come addictive! The worst teachers are those that will not take each child on merit. I found out this weekend - step mom, is french teacher so the kids were talking about french teachers/school, like she needed that - that both my kids have the same french teacher, my daughter raves about her, as does the teacher about my daughter, and spends the lesson, talking french, translating, so on........my son, same teacher, but obviously with different attitude (daughters only being an arse at home, son is universal and can be the same person 24/7) he spends his lessons copying out of a book. After talking to my step mom (who is younger than me by 3 yrs) it is apparent that most teachers don't have the time, patience or training to deal with kids that just need a different approach to learning and as they have targets etc., of their own, its just to time consuming to bother! Isn't that good to know! Sometimes the best learning is that done out of school....look at Richard Branson, Tom Cruise and a host of other rich and famous celebs who are either dyslexic or non academic who made it big after school.

My husband has just been diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic....well about a year ago. My son, being glucose intolerant can have similar traits, the sugar high and dip. I have really low blood pressure, 90 over 52 and that was after minor surgery the other week! and need to feed regularly, made myself sound like I am in a zoo.....but just lately we have noticed that Ben can drink cup after cup of tea....the monster size tea cups and pee for Britain, so am thinking another blood test might be a good idea.

ps. Nobby, why haven't you had your daughter diagnosed? As a parent you have to insist if you think that is the problem. I very nearly belted the head teacher - whom I did manage to get the sack eventually - as she said they had known for about a year of his problems and yet told me that he was fine and doing well, because it is a medical problem not educational, which I believe to be complete tut! Ben was in year 2. It took a couple of years for it all to be done, but he is now on record as having dyslexica and dyscalucli - dyslexic with numbers, so does get special attention, even if calling it special needs is a bit much - sometimes its like banging your head against a wall!

Well i was a bit reluctant to get it on her record - our school has a history of "social cleansing" and will pick on one child they think lowers the school and will do everything they can to get them out. I have watched them do it to 2 of my friends and their kids in the past 2yrs, and it seems the more fuss you kick up, the more risk of them building a portfolio of "offences" to get your child expelled. At one point, my friend got about 10 phonecalls in one day regarding different problems at school. Basically instead of telling him off, they would ring her. It really got her down. I have made complaints, but they go no further than the headteacher and his cronies (oh sorry, governers..) who are all related/married to each other and so dont bother with complaints. You are not allowed to go to the local authorities until its gone through the governers. Oh and if you are really lucky, you can check the school records on your child - and find a whole portfolio on YOU too. They make comments on the parents too. I would recommend anyone to get hold of their child's school records and have a good read. Some of the stuff they put about my friend and her family was horrendous/bordering on libel!

Karen, maths was my weakest point at school, does that make SIX SONS? Jees, and I just had a monster row with my ONE!

Nobby, yep, the school is an arse! I was lucky - if you can call it that, my foster mum was a head teacher and my step mum a head of year/lanugage teacher so I had insider knowledge, hence the getting rid/sack of the head teacher who caused us so many problems, wicked evil twisted old cow! The Governer is not allowed to side with the school and is in fact suppose to liase with the parent and school, show me a governer that does this and I will show you the moon, guided tour! That particular head, tried to get my son statemented for behaviour, that is the one you do not want, with that other schools can turn you away. However, getting statemented for learning is in the schools interest as they get more money, they probably don't know that as most need a good parent to tell them! I had to educate my foster mum in dyslexic children, she had been teaching for 20 years! But, can't complain, she told me how to play the system and after 2 years of very hard work, I got rid, not for my benefit as I moved my kids before I even wrote the first letter. But, it did make me feel good, the only bad point was they gave her the option of early retirement so she could still keep her pension, bloodly shame, my son never got to keep his confidence! What ever way you choose to go, NEVER EVER EVER, go into a meeting with ANY school without a witness, even if that means you have to beg another parent you don't even know, even if the teacher in question is being really kind and nice and gently guiding you to ....'somewhere more private, for a little chat'.....NEVER EVER EVER, they twist EVERYTHING. That isn't to say I don't trust any teacher anymore (I probably don't), and have actually met some that really do seem to care, but, they will protect themselves, their job and their school first................does that sound too bitter?!!

ps, had all that, with the phone calls etc., if you write to the governer they have to reply - always keep copies - once they have replied you can then forward their, and it will be unhelpful unless you live somewhere really fab, like the moon, - letter and then the authorities will look into it for you, you will need patience and a calm manner, fake it, I did! If they don't reply after 7 -10 days you can forward your letter to the authorities and they then deal with it! Our governer got suspended. Our lovely head, decided half way through her campaign that another child was actually worse, and one day met me by my car to have 'a little laugh' and to say that there had been a fight between my son and this boy, and my son won. What a b$£&*h.! I could go on, but better not, still very bitter, can anyone tell?!!

pps, if you think your child is unhappy at school because of the teacher, you are well within your rights and the law, to remove your child for a short period of time as long as you tell the school that your child is suffering from social and emotional stress caused by the teaching.......now thats a cracker! ....................definately going now!

Ah interesting to know..so many things are not above board with this school - they've locked my daughter in a toilet (after losing a close family friend, so she was grieving and the school knew that!) as a punishment..he lost her, didnt put her on school bus then asked the classroom assistant to drive her home...and you know i fostered a child once? Well, her mother is always at the school, taking my daughter for unsupervised lessons in stuff like bellydancing - and she makes my daughter sit outside, tells her how crap she is etc...and when i complained coz i dont want this woman anywhere near my daughter - they sed she'd passed the CRB check, so shes fine and theres nothing i can do about it!!! This woman has a 15yr history of child abuse!! Her partner who beat the daughter i fostered is now their lollypop man, and also goes on school residentials with the kids. How messed up is THAT>!
Anyway, school is adamant there is nothing i can do - but this woman goes by 3different names and im sure they didnt CRB check every single one. Unfortunately charges were dropped in our abuse case, due to the daughter breaking down and going back home..she also lied about one tiny part, to get something done about it (2nd time i'd fostered her..) and coz of that they dropped the whole case.
Know anything i can do about that?! The school even gave her a flippin' bouquet of flowers inthanks for her help all year....! The headteacher knows her history, as he had to be involoved too, as do social services.

Sounds like you had the sister school to mine! If you ring the Education Services and get it on the record they have to do something about it - probably better to send a registered letter and keep a copy, a bit of an expense for you but it makes sure you have record of sending it. Failing that you could remove your child, I did with mine, and put into another school. You can do this by contacting another school, it is supposed to be confidential, I contacted several small schools and visited one of them, before I had time to collect my kids that afternoon the head had contacted our head and slated me, NICE! I did eventually get a school, locally to me and followed all my foster mum's advice, didn't slate the teacher etc., but did break down in tears as the head was so nice to me, turns out that was the best thing I ever did the kids had a fabulous 6 weeks before we moved (sold the house prior to moving schools but just couldn't face sending them back to that woman!). Never slate the teacher, just say that you have had differences of opinion etc., by being negative it goes against you, and most likely on record!, but by being positive......When you remove your child, you only have to say that their social development is being hampered by the teaching methods used at that school - or words to that effect! Now I am a bloodly nuisance to the school, I ring up about everything and anything, have had heated discussions about how my son - it usually is him! - should be taught - he is now 14 going to be 15 next term, EVERY teacher that teaches him knows me, the pasted on smile when they see me in the car park does make me laugh.....POWER TO THE PARENT! The school are well aware of the fact I am a caring parent, that doesn't mean I haven't backed them if I think they are right, but those occasions are rare! Also, on school records should be your consent to ANYONE putting your child in a car. They have to have special insurance - which costs a fortune and is payable by the car driver NOT the school. If you haven't given permission for this person to drive your child - I refuse my kids to be driven by anyone except myself or bus companies which again you give permission at the time - as for CRB checks! In the last primary my kids attended I helped....a lot!.....I helped with the orchestra - oldest recorder player in the school lol! - painted displays, which they sold for the PTA, school trips, classroom visiting artist etc., I was determined to be known! I did this for three years, even taking children out of class in small groups, asked to take the orchestra alone etc., they finally asked my permission for a CRB check three months before my youngest left it came through the September she started high school! AT the leaving assembly, in which I was the only parent involved, being in the orchestra, I never even got a thank you, the parents were disgusted! And that was a nice school!

Karen, any news on the grandson? Glad I am not the only one with a third child - the grown up hubby! What is it with men, we are going away this hols, and he has organized what he is going to take.........camera and power kite! This from a man in his 40's! When questioned about clean underwear - I am nothing if not predictable! - he honestly had no idea on how the packing, clean clothes etc., makes it away with us!

Laney, you sound just like me!! The pasted on smiles comment made me laugh, i get that too, and as for parent evenings - they physically shudder as i walk into the room...lol I have offered to help in classes, they refuse me and invite the other woman, although i have worked alongside her on the one time, when i pushed to be involved! I would dearly love to remove my child - she begs me to, in fact - but i dont drive and cant get transport unless she is kicked out, and as for the headteacher slating you..i have had this too, as has my friend! VERY hard not to slate them back, but they are all in each other's pockets, it would seem.
On a lighter note - Lol about the holidaying hubby! I am often tempted to sign up for wifeswap so he will actually realise just how much i do! I swear if i wasnt here, he'd go to work in his pj's - and thats everyday, let alone holidays!! lol
