My 1997 306 Diesel Estate has covered 176,00 trouble free miles. Recently whislt driving it suffers an occasional lack of accelaration and it feels like something is holding it back this is accompanied by black smoke from the exhaust. Then within a a minute it accelerates normally and the smoke is gone. It is most noticeable when travelling uphill or after travelling at say 30-40mph for some time and then accelerating in fourth gear. The injectors ahve been tested and I am assured they are fine. Any suggestions would be much appreciated

In that case look at injector number 2 from timing belt end, it should have a wire on it. This is the needle lift sensor, they have a habit of corroding and having a loose connection, clean the terminals with something like WD40 or a good electrical cleaner, then let me know how you get on.

Yeah the needle lift sensor is for timing almost like a cam sensor and they can easily go faulty at this kind of mileage.

It is part of injector number 2, just replace the whole unit, cost you between 20 and 50 quid depending on where you go for replacement part.
