I've just bought an 02 C5 2.0 HPi and in the service history is a bill for £1056 to have this fault fixed.

It went in with the anti-pollution massage showing , the dealer diagnosed an upstream lambda sensor probe fault and the fuel pressure regulator being faullty. These were both changed but the fault reoccurred whilst they were testing it.
This time the diagnosis was a faulty fuel pump that had in fact caused the damage to the other componants. This was changed and all was well !
Not sure if this helps but your diagnosis sounds pretty similar to mine.

A common fault with peugeot and citroen is the lift pump breaking up and fragments getting past the filter and messing the pump up. Always be very careful when replacing the fuel filter.
