How long since last service? How bad are the gases?
Have you had the ecu read for error codes? If it has been running rich for a long time then the cat could be blocked. You would need to take it off & look into it to see if the honeycombe is blocked with carbon. This would mean there is a fault elsewhere. You need to put a digital meter on the pre-cat oxygen sensor & check the voltage. I would have changed this one first. Really you should do this with a scope & check it at the ecu in case of broken wires in the loom. Sensor faults would show up in the ecu fault codes so a good £25 spent. Check the valve timing. If the belt has been changed & is one tooth out it will be enough to fail emissions. Also if you have a fault with the vvc then will mess with the emissions. If it is only just out then it could be plugs & oil. You can spend a lot of time tyring to track the fault so prob. best go to a specialist diagnostic that know what they are doing.

thankyou again for the great advice

p.s so if i take cat off today and have a look for it being blocked if is blocked you feel it shows there is a fault ????

That's a high figure. I would expect the cat to be blocked. Don't bother to take it in anywhere with a blocked cat, if this is the case. If it is blocked it just increases the co level because it stops the gases from passing causing poor flow through the head. Check it first, i'm sot sure of your cat but some are only the box & looking through it is easy. Hold it up to the light, You should be able to see through all of the honeycombes. You can attempt a clean with oven cleaner (oven pride oven & bbq cleaner, comes in an orange & blue box). Leave the solution in for an hour or so & then flush it with water for half an hour. Also do the oxygen sensor. This is a get you back on the road quick fix, you should get a replacement asap.
Faults, like I said. Oxy sender in the downpipe or a break in the loom to the sensor or cam timing. Replace the temp sender. Check that the correct spark plugs have been fitted & do a compression test. Then take it for a diagnostic. Make sure the garage can read the ecu & reset it also scope the sensors. Idealy you need a specialist diagnostic workshop as most garages don't have the kit to be able to do this & you will be wasting your money.
