vauxhall Astra High idle speed

hi wondered if anyone had problems with high idle speed. I have an astra 1600cc 8 valve club 1999 with 46000 on the clock. i have changed the idle speed control valve but it made no difference the idle speed must be at least 3000 revs ( i dont have a rev counter) before i replaced it it was about 2000/25000 revs and when i took the old unit out to get the number and replaced it it went from 2000/5000 to at least 3000 when i put the new valve in it stayed high
hope some one can help cant afford gararge fees at the moment, i am hopeing it just a sencor and not the ECU
