believe me the sleeping thing is rare! my hubby and i were saying that too, that hopefully now people who would have bought a pup from these terrible people will think better of it and those who were thinking of using one of their dogs as a stud will look elswhere. well we can but hope anyway!

Thats terrible TJF - have you contacted your breeder to kick their a*s?! Poor little dog. I just replied in another thread, i dont know anything about HD, are there treatments for it?

don't think there is much they can do for hd when they have it apart from offer pain releif i could be wrong though as there may be an operation they can have but how successful that is nobody knows

A very distorted programme based on a witch hunt!
This programme took two years to make and all they came up with was a handful of bad apples??? Where were the interviews showing the responsible caring breeders? Such is the power of modern day media that most people believe everything they see on television without question.
Putting any healthy animal down is morally wrong but then to have an organisation (RSPCA) jumping on the bandwagon and pontificating about it (KC and RSPCA have always been involved in a longstanding feud).................well they had the right people on board who put this practise to work daily by putting down any healthy animal young or old that doesn't look like a pedigree.
does make you stop and think though now before you go and buy that puppy which has got to be a good thing hasn't it

There is loads that can be done for hd , ops at 6 months , hip replacement after the growth plates have finished growing etc , but we went down the treatment route with cartrophen jabs and glucosamine , and Sammy as most people know is doing brilliantly and you wouldn't know he has it , other than if he has overdone the exercise he will be a bit grumpy if you stroke his worst hip , but leave him alone to rest and he's up and bouncing around again in no time at all and can run around on his extending lead at his own pace for a good hour ( we just don't let him bomb around ) more of a canter than a gallop ! he is no worse now than when he was 19 months old , infact a lot better as he was lame then , he will be 4 in Jan .

Scary is an understatement , you wouldn't believe the panic that rises , even though we had a feeling that Sam may have had it as he was a bit clicky as a pup , and we only thought about that as friends had a young labrador that had been diagnosed at 6 months and his hips really clicked as he walked , they went down the route of painkillers and hydrotherapy though and even had more xrays done after a year or so which showed improvement in his hips , but although he is only about a year older than Sam , he has about a third of his energy and tires really quickly , they do struggle with his weight though , we are lucky as i think Sams metabolism comes from his bc side not the labby one , we were told though that Cartrophen is like a miracle cure for some dogs and doesn't do anything for others , so Sammy was a very lucky boy , although it could all flair up as arthritis as he gets older , at the moment he lives and acts like a young dog should , so it's just keep him as fit and active as possible ( it's all we can do ) plus the glucosamine of course and loads of carrots .

my american akita had bad arthritus from a very young age as they had kept him caged for alot of his days as they said they couldn't walk him he's no longer with me now had to make that heart breaking decision and have him put to sleep but i kept him pain free for alot of years he was 17 when he died he couldn't hardly get to his feet anymore so it was time to say goodbye he too struggled with his weight although he didn't eat that much but he weighed a whopping 10 stone he was a big lad

I personally think weight is the key factor , that and keeping the back end really muscled up , i worry sometimes that Sam is too thin , then we go for a check up and i get told by our vet " i wish every dog looked like Sammy " when our old goldie got to nearly 16 , the vet ( a locum at the time ) wanted to know how we kept him so fit and well , our only reason was that we never let him put on extra weight and still took him out a couple of times every day for short walks ( wish it worked for me and my hubby as we can never lose it ) even with all my dog walking !

he was much bigger when we got him but no matter what we did he just couldn't shed those xtra pounds no matter how many times we walked him used to take him through the woods everyday in his youth but as he got older he stopped wanting to go as much and was happy to potter round the block or the garden so we knew he was slowing down he lived to a ripe old age though more than some i know what you mean about it working on us i wish too

Thanks Kitty , he is hard work though , it's harder trying to keep him calm - ish ! the monster just did a full blown beg and stayed up , after stealing my flip flops and teasing me with them ( not good for the hips me thinks ) but he thinks he's very clever (: i hope all of your doggy family are doing okay now ?
