Hi,

We have a 10 month old baby and are looking for a small dog / puppy for him so a child-friendly breed is imperative. Can anyone recommend a particular type please? We do not want to pay for a dog and will definitely not go to any puppy farms...

Small and child friendly , has to be a cavalier king charles ( just watch out as they are prone to health problems though )  you will generally always have to pay something as most people won't give dogs away anymore and rescues will often charge around £100 upwards to cover the costs of neutering , any treatment and jabs etc , then you have insurance etc to pay for too .

Hi,

Thank you for your reply. I like those types of dog. I cant understand why an owner would sell them when they want them to go to good homes but understand why a shelter does want a donation.

Trouble is so many people are trying to get hold of dogs for not very nice reasons ( read some old posts for some horror stories )  so people hope that if you are willing to pay you are willing to look after it properly , lots of dogs go missing today to poss be used as bait for fighting dogs etc , so free could mean death for someones beloved pet , would hate to be in that situation , just beware as the doggy world is so full of scams today its scary , many tears rescue in wales often has cavvies to rehome ( often young ex breeding bitches ) have a look at there web site .

Go for a staffie because before dog fighters got a hold of them they were known as one the best family dogs there is and all of the staffies round where I live are child and dog friendly. I have a staffie cross and he is so well behaved. When I was doing research into what breed would be suitable for us (friendly, good with people, trainable, shedding, dog friendly) the staffie cme up top.

My choice as a child friendly dog would be a whippet or a pug.

Well i agree that there are many suitable dogs but would think a whippet a good choice. they are clean gentle dogs.

Tibetan Spaniel
But they are hairy and jolly hard to get hold of!
Or of course the trusted labrador

Even better if you could go along to your local rescue centre and ask if they have anything suitable you will generally have to make a donation though.

Hi Kerry , as much as i love Labbies and Goldies ( my fav breed) i don't think they would make a good first dog , too nutty and bouncy for a baby and they need an awfull lot of training first  ( unless you can get hold of a well trained older dog of course that has already calmed down a lot  (: my Sammy at three and a half is still a loon when he wants to be ( he is lab x bc though )

i know you said small dog but i'd go for a greyhound or lurcher, they hardly take up any room (honest!) and they are fantastic with kids of all ages, i speak from a lifetime of experience :-) its a sad fact that there are always greyhounds and lurchers looking for new homes either free or very cheap but this does mean you should be able to find one pretty easily.

greyhounds are great first dogs, and very easy going. :-)
My best dog with kids are spaniels - but they are a handful and wouldnt get a young one with a baby as they are bouncy! Mine was about 6yrs old, and became my kids 2nd mummy. They are hard work though and need lots of exercise!

i agree with rtt ... cavaliers... cant get a better breed. but i dont think you will find one for free. their are alot of mixed breeds and they go much cheaper than pedigrees.
any dog brought up right will be fab with kids..
i have 3 dogs.. a cattle dog. a cavalier and a chihuahua all are fab with my siblings aged.. 2...5...6...9....10...14...17 (me)...21(sister) and with my mum and any friends that come around..
pip my cattle dog tends to bark at people for the first 5 minutes of meeting them though lol.
out of them all as an ideal family pet i would definatly say the cavalier..

good luck finding your perfect pup.. try the classifieds on this site.. its where i found my last pup and where i found my cavaliers stud too. its a great site

Hi,

I love cavaliers but have heard they can have so many health problems. I totally agree that any dog bought up right is good with children, adults and other animals. Does anyone know what you call them little tiny dogs (my dad calls them the "wag and paris hilton dog") and do you know about their background/personalities?

yeah they are called chihuahuas and they are just like any other small dog it's the way you bring them up some would say they are snappy just as they would the poodle and i have 4 of those and none are snappy but i know some that are so if you bring them up right they can be perfect little companions they are classed as little lap dogs

i have a chihuahua and shes perfect.. like i said earlier i live in a house with 6 young kids and all my dogs are fab with them.. chihuahuas need a lot of socialisation so puppy classess is a good idea and even before the jabs take the chihuahua out with you (carrying it of course) once jabs are done when people come over to greet make sure theyre slow and dont scare your chi because that is when they become snappy. ...when they are frightened. my chi isnt snappy at all. i have only ever met 2 snappy chi's to be honest.

however you said you dont want to pay for a dog.. you WONT find a chihuahua for free. have you considered a cross. some people charge mad prices for crosses too. id say still worth it though lol. but others sell them faily cheap. chihuahua x jack rusell can go for a little over £100 here.. if you really want a chi my advise is to SAVE UP because they are worth every penny :)

i really wouldnt suggest a small dog with a very small child. i have nothing against them personally (i love all dogs) but if nothing else they are far more 'breakable' than a more solidly built dog and they can be snappy. (i dont believe poodles are nippy dogs, or at least i have never known one who is) if greyhounds or lurchers arent for you, a springer really isnt a bad idea, i dont think i have ever met a miserable one :-) or even a scruffy cross breed maybe?

nw4.. chihuahuas are not snappy its the same as any breed its how theyre brought up.. i have a chi and a 2year old brother living in the same house they get on great.. of course with the chi being so small even though my brother is gentlr they are NEVER left alone but i would never leave a dog and a child together alone anyways tbh
