Thetford Fridge

I have a Bailey Pageant Vendee fitted with a Thetford fridge, I am having trouble with it working on gas, it will light and the flame indicater will go into the green but on releasing the gas flow knob it will go out, I first thought it was an airlock but after several attempts it would still not stay alight. After many attempts I did get it to stay lit once and the exhaust was quite black leaving black marks on the side of the van, after that I have not been successful getting it to work since. I have replaced the thermalcouple but this has not cured the problem. Any body out there who can help please.
