My peugeot has failed its test today as the hand brake needs adjusting, I dont know how to do it or where on the car it is.

the cable from both rear wheels runs along the axle, you will see on the ends of the cable at the middle of the axle there is a adjusting nut you can try taking that up a few turns or at the hanbrake ratchet end there is an adjusting nut there aswell you have to remove part of the plastic cover to get at it from inside the car but a common fault with 405/6 is the adjusters in the drum slacken off (the adjusters on the brake shoes themselves) the drums need to be removed and re adjusted there, good luck with it not a massive job sounds worse than it is

hi

As it is only the handbrake and not the service brake, I would not worry about the self adjusters, if they needed doing you would have excess brake pedal travel, and unless the tester has put this on the advises.

Reason I say this is that if you remove the rear hubs to check, you will require a big socket (32mm) to remove the hub, and new nuts and a torque wrench to replace the hubs.

If you remove the plastic trim behind the h/brake lever you will see the cables ending at an adjuster. Release the h/brake turn the adjuster until you have the correct setting (think it is 4 or 5 clicks CHECK THIS as im saying it from memory). Replace cover.

Now to test h/brake start car, now with h/brake on, put into reverse and try to move off slowly, you should now feel the car rising at the rear, as the brakes hold the car (dont expect them to hold it totaly) this should be even both sides, if this is ok take car back for re test.

Al
