Before I start I know that some one is going to suggest going to a repair shop or pc world but the prices are just to much, any way the problem my Daughter has a laptop, she is at college and all her work is stored on this laptop, but we cant get it to power up, the battery will not charge, when she plugs it in it is shorting some where as there are flashes that can be seen under the circut board, QUESTION. HOW CAN WE RECHARGE THE BATTERY? are there table top chargers around for this? all we need do is get enough power in it to transfer her files.

Hello. A different charger to the computer one won't make any difference to the fact that it is shorting. The short requires a repair. The most important thing is to get the data from disc so that she can continue her work. Until the computer is repaired all that data can be on a key-drive. That will enable her to do her work on any computer. You will need someone computer savvy to do this.

If you have a home computer you could remove heg it into r hard drive from the laptop and get yourself a 'convertor' from maplins, basically its a lead with a female for the drive one end and a usb plug the other, fit the drive to the non usb end and plug it into another pc (even a friends !), and burn the files to cd. The lead is not expensive, try http://www.maplin.co.uk and search

best of luck Dave

Hello. The advice you've been given doesn't require the laptop to have any power. As I said, you need someone with computer savvy. They'll just take the files off your daughter's laptop hard disk and transfer them to wherever you wish.

No I appreciate it won't power up. Look at the bottom of the laptop and you will see a square plate with one screw, undo the screww and slide out the hard drive and use the lead as suggested

see http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=48965

its very simple to use, just use the adaptor fir your drive one end, then plug into a friends usb port and burn onto cd or dvd.

As for the laptop, it sounds like a new motherboard and they are not cheap, if you need any help with the removal of the drive call me 01753 596568 I'd be happy to help

hi Tony

When I worked for IBM they got word back from customers that their chargers were catching fire, there was a pallet full of these chargers that got trashed there & then. My point is if you can see flashes coming from your laptop would it not be best to have someone have a look at it as it seems rather dangerous (fire hazard!). Also why look for other chargers if the laptop is shorting out, it must be shorting before current is getting to battery, as far as I know most laptops can power up without the battery, using mains adaptor alone.

If you continue to put power through its only going to damage diodes & chips making matters worse for you.

There are companies out there that can recover the data from you hard drive maybe this would be the best option you have.

Hi Tony.If this is not a laptop You could remove the hard drive from the computer and install it to an exrenal hard drive enclosure. Then connect it to another computer via a usb cable, this would allow you to access the files on your hard drive.Enlosures are available from EBAY or compter markets for a few pounds.
Any more advice, email me regards Alan

Alan
Thanks for the message, unfortunately this is a laptop, we are getting arking from the mains input when pluged in so we cant run the system, however in saying that I have removed the H,D and purchased a usb to sata adaptor, I can get the files up my computer but cant access them, there is a password stopping access and we cant get round that. later on when we can afford it we will have to take it to a pro and get sorted.
regards
Tony.
