I have a 1989 1.8 ford sierra which has a miserious problem.

when travelling for about 5 mins the car will start missfiring and will eventually come to a hault.

after a couple of mins it will restart then carry on for another five mins.

i have checked the breather system and the alternator but these are ok.

any ideas???

I had a mini that did this. It always used to do it at high speed (well it was high speed for a mini anyway :-) It would misfire, completely lose power, and then, when you had almost halted, it would return back to normal.

After much investigation, it turned out to be an intermittant electrical connection in the ignition wiring - the wire between the points and the coil if I remember right. Someone had used one of those nasty blue 'fold over' connectors that people often use to fit trailer electrics.

I guess it's not _that_ likely that you've got the same problem, but it might be worth checking all the electrical connections. Run the engine then pull all the wiring about in the engine bay - see if you can reproduce the misfire.

Same problem with a Sierra 1.8 Estate. Blowing out the fuel lines and carb fixed it for about two weeks . Now it's back to it's old tricks. Any ideas ?

I blew an airline down the main pipe from the tank to the fuel pump and blew the little gause filter in the pipe into the tank.

fingers crossed no problems

mid you i have fitter an inline fuel filter

I have also replaced the push rod on the end of the mechanical fuel pump as well as i heard this caused problems too.

Dropped it into the garage and the inside of the tank is shedding rust scales which are blocking the tank filter. Hopefully a new tank and another clear through will sort it. (A blocked tank breather wasn't helping matters either.)

I had the same problem on an old VW Golf... the solution: replace the 6-inch lonk felxible end of the fuel pipe in the tank... the end had become frayed up, and was getting blocked... 50p's worth of fuel line, and it was fixed!
