Hi folks, Due to bad starting i replaced my glow plugs a couple of weeks ago and problem solved. However the problem has come back (i have done about 500 miles on them) i have tested the new plugs and 3 do not work. I have also tested the relay and this is working but feeds the plugs for around 40-50 seconds before switching off. I am going to put another set of plugs in now. Does anyone think the relay is feeding the plugs to long ie causing them to burn out prematurely?.

if they are staying on that long without the engine running that could be the problem they should only be on about 20 seconds without the engine running.

with the engine running its ok they can stay on for upto five mins or more

Thanks for your reply. With ignition on or engine running they are fed for 40-50 seconds. This seems a little long to me, i know times may vary but my old vauxhall combo glow plugs stayed on 8 secs in low temps and started first time every time. If there is a fault is it possibly in the engine managment or is it simply the relay timer circuit. Any ideas appreciated, cheers.

hi

what make of heater plugs did you buy ? i have bought (once only) cheaper ones that like yours lasted only a few months, and stranded the wife and kids, whilst I was working away.

yes maybe 50 secs is a bit long, but if the resistance (because there isnt the full quota of plugs drawing current) is reduced then this is possable (a bit like the flasher on your indicators when a bulb goes)

I would go and buy some good plugs (full set) and replace them and re time how long the power is on, if still excessive then you can replace the relay (these are not cheap for some vehicles).

Al

Hi mate,
The first set of plugs only lasted 3 weeks max (make unsure) which is why i suspect their staying on to long. I have now fitted NGK glow plugs and these are also being fed power for 40-50 secs. I will replace the relay next but knowing my luck it will be an engine management issue lol. Thanks for your reply.
