hi there.i just bought a 1996 zx 1.9 diesel elation estate.i took it for a long drive home, stopping a couple times and restarting the car after about 1 hour each time[very cold day]. the next day i couldnt get it started.it was trying, turning over but not fireing up enough to start.i thought it might be the immobiliser but i got it started after using 'easy start' spray. the glow plugs are relatively new but it does have a slight fuel leak at the throttle.the guy in the garage said it could be something to do with the relay.im stuck.. anyone got any ideas for a cheap repair?

Instead of waiting for the pre heat light to go out before starting listen for a click from the relay usually 5 secs or so after the light goes out, give the glow plugs a little more time to heat

Hi, had the same problem with mine day after a long journey. The pump needed priming by pumping a rubber balloon type pump in the engine compartment. Cured it and started ever since.

thanks but it turned out to be caused by the fuel leak.it'd been dripping into the alternator.as soon as i fixed the leak the alternator went into cold turkey and couldnt provide enough charge to the battery to warm the glow plugs.but im happy to report, after a trip to the garage and a thorough squeezing of my purse 'mr leaf' ,as we like to call him,is up and running again and doing us proud.
