Please help?Have a Rover 45 and the heater is only blowing cold air. I have looked through this forum and there are a few posts but being mechanically illiterate I am finding it hard to establish the fault? So far can confirm that I am getting cold air. Have checked the hot / cold knob and it seems to move quite a bit between hot / cold so seems o.k. No loss of water, oil or power so unlikely head gasket? Pipe from rad to thermostat (I think) is hot and then the heating pipe is hot next to the engine but stone cold past that? Any help greatly appreciated.

Where the heater hose goes into the car there is a tap. It is operated by a wire from the knob in the car. The tap often siezes up & the wire is not strong enough to open the tap. So use a pair of pliers & a little oil to work the leaver back & forth to ease the tap & leave it in the opposite direction you found it so it should be on.

Brian, thanks but this is fine and appears to be working correctly moving backwards and forwards freely.I've also noticed that my fan is noisier than normal and continues for an extended period after I turn off the engine although my car doesn't seem to be overheating (but the furthest I've driven is about 25 miles since this started)?

Get your car to a garage asap! have it checked for coolant leaks. The only reason for no heat is a low coolant level. So the fluid has gone somewhere. Get them to bleed the system & check the coolant for exhaust gasses. Could be just the water pump leaking. Your engine must be kept cooled correctly or you face a big bill for a head gasket very soon!

hi, as u probably know u have 1 heater hose coming from heater to thermastat housing and 1 going to where the fan sender is, at normal temperature with heater control on red both these pipes should be hot, if there not then valve as previous mentioned is not opening or u have air lock, blocked heater or flaps not working, has system been bled properly? procedure, fill up expansion tank to level undo 8ml bleed screw right side of cylinder head untill all air is out keep topping up to level so no more air can get in, put cap back on and run to normal temp, top up if nessessary when cooled.Radiator fan comes on about 92 degrees so will continue running after car is switched off if at this temperature, also check that bottom of rad is warm as they circulate from the top down if bottom doesnt get warm then its usually thermastat. hope this helps.Richard

bit late getting back what r your symtoms, because the one i have just done boiled up with oil in the expansion tank, prior to this i had no heat from heater like yours, i replaced thermostat and temperature switches but still boiled up, i too thought head gasket but i bled it through another 3 times and hey presto everything working as it should do,heater working , radiator fan coming on at right time etc. What i deduced from this is there was air trapped in heater, and also head gasket had been done befor, leaving oil deposits in the system only comming to the surface because of the boiling up. this was about 6 wks ago running fine. i have had this befor with other makes thats why i didnt start stripping straight away. u may be lucky.

You will see I advise in other posts that the top hose is taken off the heater when bleeding these. This is to release the air lock in the heater. It should not be a problem if the ball valve is clear in the inlet manifold though.
