Hi, I changed the head gasket on my 1999 1.2 punto. (it did'nt need doing but I was changin the water pump so thought I might as well while I was in there!). I then flushed the engine and refilled with 10W40. Problem is now the oil light comes on at slow idle. Goes out when revved. I dropped the sump and cleaned the pickup tube/strainer but no difference. Where do I go from here? the engines done 62k. Please help! kind regards, steve

Hi, unfortunately the oil pressure switch did'nt make any difference. Now the haynes book (my only source of knowledge) states the oil should be 10w30 but I've now find in the punto handbook that the oil should be 15w30. Do you think thicker oil would help????????

hi, i think you have covered everything apart from the oil pump itself,,it maybe worn and not giving enough oil pressure to the components.. if the pressure is not there then it will not put the light out..you can generaly tell a worn pump by when you first start the car after it has been stood overnight ,you will hear a growl from the bottom end til the pump builds up pressure in the engine..hope this helps..cheers...moz..

thanx moz you've been a good help. I think i was trying to kid myself the oil was ok and there would be a quik fix cos I did'nt fancy removing the sump again! So I'll just have to bite the bullet.. Just another quick one..........after doing all this work, when ever the heater/blower is on now all the windows steam up inside. Could this just be moisture in the heating systen from the car overheating so many times b4 the head was done? Or could it be something more serious????

I can now hear the bottom end grumble on start up and the oil light comes on sooner than it used to, so I think the pump is getting worse. Any idea where I can get a pump? The local parts shops don't sell them. Main dealer prices are rediculous. kind regards,

this is a long shot, if you know the answer to this I'll be amazed.............I found a oil pump in the breakers and it looked identical so i've fitted it. then the car would'nt start and I notice the little sensor thing that should line up with the cog on the crank sprocket is not in line with cog but inline with the power steering pump belt. about 10mm out infact. The casting on the pump that holds the sensor thingy sticks out slightly more i've seen on close inspection. I don't know what the sensor thingy does but when it's not pointing at the sprocket cog there's no spark to the plugs. I think I know the answer..........I've fitted the wrong f****ng pump! Any one got a rope?????????

No mate I fitted it right. I've been looking round the breakers yards today and hav'nt seen one pump like mine. The problem is I need one from a car with power steering. On most cars the the alternater pulley is first then the cog for the sensor is on the outside of that On mine the cog is first then the aternator pulley, then the power steering pulley. This all means the sensor does'nt line up if it's not the right one. Any way we live and learn. Seems like it's going to be a pain in the arse to find one though. kind regards, sweaty

Hi Moz do you think your oil pump is one from a power steering model? e.i. the crank sensor pulley is tight up th pump housing so that the 2 pulleys (alt and p/s) can go on the outside?

ok thanx, I'm in the proccess of drilling out the casting to alter the position of the sensor! sounds drastic I know but if I can bodge it and get it to run I can see if the oil light comes on which will tell me if the pump was the problem or not....if it is it might pay me to buy a new one. ta anyway
