Also on a side note when the car is stood and the engine idling every now and then the car shudders as if the engine was trying to stall even though there is no change in revs this happens every 15 seconds or so is this related or a sepearate problem, any replies will be greatly appreciated

you need to find out if your car is fitted with a dual mass flywheel before doing anything else mate. if it is prepare yourself for a nasty shock.
