If you want to check the timing its quite easy to do so and withount going into detail on here its easiest if you can obtain a haynes manual for it - but again my genuine advice is to put the money into a new car? Plenty of bargains to be had at the moment - example my mrs has just picked up a fiat punto 60sx (1.2) on an R97 with 47k on clock, taxed and tested, for a measley £400 quid to get her around while i've got the job of sorting out her beloved astra coupe.
