Blimey a cambridge, an old neighbour of mine had one of these, the guy was in his 80's and he used to start the car give it nigh on full throttle straight away for 5 mins to get it warm!!!!

Cant do that to a car nowadays!!!

Just curious Top guy how could you tell the difference between a Cambridge and an Oxford from that photo as I seem to remember them looking fairly similar externally but it's been a long time since I've seen one and wondered what subtle differences were apparent ?

hi

Just so there is no argument......

This is a 1959 A 55 mk II colours Orchid and Black,
1489 cc with floor change.

Distinguishing it as an Austin -- the Austin has a square mesh grill with an Austin badge on it, whilst the Oxford had horizontal chrome slats.
The Austin has a short crome finisher on the front of the bonnet, the Morris has a full length strip further up the bonnet and the round Morris badge in front of it. The bonnet its self also has a differnt profile, running up to the air vents which also share differnt profiles.
The colours Orchid and Black were also an Austin only option.

This car, like my own, is a 1959 car, distingushed by the streamlined version of the 'flying A' in front of the bonnet crome strip, the wipers park on the right, and not visiable in this picture the front doors have a differnt shape where they meet the B post, and the numberplate light is a single bulb round dome shape fitting. All these feathures changed from 1960.

In 1960, the bonnet A was dispenced with, the wipers changed to park on the left, the front door shape at the B post changed, and the numberplate light became a horizontal double bulb unit. (The same unit that went on to be used on the later A60 and the P6 Rover).

Al

Jeez now that's what I call an Austin anorak ! ha ha only kiddin AL
I do seem to remember the different grills on some of them though but I just put that down to age differences but the rest of the items of detail you mention are certainly beyond anything I noticed Al
Anyway thanks for the Reference !
P.S. Also just to say that I wasnt saying Top Guy was wrong in anyway but was genuinely curious as to the differences.

hi

When you own and drive a 50 year od car, having driven it over 100 K, and owned it over half its life, you pick up these things. Some times the hard way, like a buying a second one for spares, trailored it nearly 200 miles and then find loads of bits dont fit !

Top Guy was spot on with it being a Cambridge, but i wsn't sure if he knew the year and that it is an A55 mkII not an A60! yet more diferences which i'll see if someone else can list! ?

Al

To clear it all up..... I guess it was a fluke, i totally forgot about the oxford... lol. But the oxford as Al said has a chrome slats and ive got a feelin he means a big chrome grill (like the vanden plas allegro in a way)

Would never have known the year Al, way before my time, im only 36 and bet your car looks like its had a easier life than my astra... lol

Top Guy I'm around your age as well but I used to work for Austin rover and started as an apprentice back in the eighties and the boss turned nothing away !
Loads of MGB S , Wolsleys etc and one or two Cambridge and Oxfords
On that note Al I seem to vaguely remember the two of them sitting side by side in the carpark and the dash on one had more dials and gauges than the other and seemed to be a little bit more plush inside trim wise.
Jeez !! I will be getting my Austin anorak badge soon lol !!!

hi

The cambridge and Oxford had identical dials and switches, but the designers just distributed them accros the dash in differnt places !

There were of course different optional extras available to either:
Heater, Radio, Clock, floor or column change (auto avail from late 1962)
Real Leather or imitatoin leather cloth separate of bench front seats, and if you really wanted them you could have front seatbelts too !

The Oxford did have crome slats running full width horizontal within the same apperature of the Austin.

The up market version Wolseley had extra dials and the upright grill similar to the two sports versions Riley and MG. There was however never a VDP version like the Allegro. That was reserved for the Big Farina, buit that would be another lengthy essay.

Al

Hi,
back in 1978 when I was 20, I had a G reg 1969 Cambridge. I drove it like a 20 yr old and needless to say it didn't last long!! When I first had it, it seemed like a Rolls Royce after parting with my mini van.
I have to admit cars back then were unreliable and often rust boxes. But the thing was you could work on them yourself. Got to say I miss those days
When me and a couple of mates would go to the scrappy on a Sunday and nick as many bits as we could hide up our jackets then pay for something small like a wiper blade!
We'd go back home, then crack open the "Party 7" and get out the tools and the filler out!

Good or bad old days??

Ha ha ha !! this sounds like a familiar memory in the scrappys a long time ago for me as well.
Bear in mind tjp, the breakers didnt have all the heavy laws and regulations on the disposing of oils, antifreeze, fuel etc that's made them have to invest in ways to be relatively enviromenatally friendly (IN RELATION TO WHAT THEY WERE ANYWAY !)
Having said that I knew a guy that ran a breakers quite a long time ago now but the money they can make on a car is pretty impressive, I know I've seen it !
Having said that if wasnt for them a lot of the old bangers that a a few of us drive on here including myself simply wouldnt be viable to run on a tight budget.
When you think about the way the japenese car market works it couldnt be more different to ours, I couldnt imagine the average woking class British bloke willingly going out and buying a brand new car every 3 years or so.
