Hithere are many reasons why the schools close in adverse weather conditions. here are some (there are lots more.....) The schools have to concider 1 how will the staff and pupils get there safely 2 will the school be safe for the staff and pupils to be there 3 will the external conditions deteriorate during the day and everyone be able to return home at the end of the day, and if they did deteriorate how would they get them home ? 4 if insufficient staff and or pupils can get to school then any actual teaching of any value may not be possable. 5 It keeps loads of un necessary cars off the roads, essential services that need to get through are not blocked by cars gettiing stuck. 6 If public transport not running, due to conditions it would indicate that same conditions would affect all car drivers too, only make really essential journeys is what it said on the news. I have a relation that is a farmer, all the roads near him got blocked with abandend 2wd cars that got stuck, the snow plough then couldn't get through to clear the roads for the tanker to collect the milk. Some of these cars were still there 2 days later, their owners making no attenpt to come along and dig them out themselves, the farmer in the end dragged two of them nearly a mile using a tractor, bet the owners wished they hadnt left then locked with the brakes on, as their tyres went bang! after only a few hundred yards! Yet, I bet some of these people are the type I saw in the shop complaining that they had walked all they way there and they didn't have any milk ! Al

In severe weather we are all told by the media "not make a journey unless itis essential" yet what is "essential"? They should be more specific. There is not point in being martyr and trying to struggle through the snow if you put yourself and others in danger. What was good about the latest snow was that it got kids out into the fresh air and doing some exercise! And also, every child should have the wonderful experience of playing in snow like that, that is what makes childhood memories special! You mentioned farmers, they do a fantastic job, out in all weathers to make sure the rest of us have enough food, so I can understand the frustration about your relative not being able to get the milk delivered even though he had made every effort.
