Hi, I'm stuck with my Lreg petrol 954 AX, it's been in the family for many years now being a very reliable car but it decided some years ago that it would sometimes not start - not any specific time of year like some people have had problems with. We took it to a garage and they changed the battery thinking this would solve the problem, but obviosuly it didn't otherwise I wouldn't be here.Gradually it has got worse and now if it is left for more than a day it will not start but the thing is that the clock will still be the correct time and ticking over. The car sometimes makes the sound that it is going to start then just slowly dies. Me and my dad have had a look at things but we cannot work out what needs to be done. As it is now my second car (I really wish it wasn't but I wanted a car that I could leave for a few days and still know I could go and start it) I cannot afford to be paying out lots of money to have it sorted as it wont be worth my while. I hope it's a simple problem and I hope someone can help me.

Sara =)

You say it won't start, does the starter turn engine over or are you getting the sort of flat battery sounds ?

So as you have replaced the battery I will assume for now that it is a new one and in full working order.

Ok so your AX is getting on a bit, so being French electrical maladies will start to show up.
First disconnect the battery and then lets start with the battery terminals; nice and clean with cables & clamps in good order? Ok move on down the earth wire to where it joins the car body undo it and give it a good clean and the body its self, if bolt rusty clean it or replace it. Now bolt it back on and smear some greese over it.

with the battery still dis connected, mobe to the live cable and trace to where and clean all joins etc, there will also be a cable direct to the starter, same here undoo clean and replace. Now whilst your down the find the engine earth to body cable, normally a braided afair, check this carefully as where it is it can get very dirty and deteriorate.

Replace battery and try again. let us know hos you get on, and anything else that may help us sort this problem for you..

AL
