I mated my dog rio who's a british bulldog cross staffordshire bull terrier with my friends british bulldog cross american bulldog 3 weeks and 1 day ago they locked for 30 - 45 mins they had met 5 times before but never locked, she acted really strange for the first 5 days after they locked, went off her food so im putting a bit of fresh meat in with her biscuits each meal time to get her to eat otherwise she wont touch it.
She does look a little bigger than she normally does and her back 4 tits (boobs) are a lot fuller than normal and are hanging lower.
I have kept a log of everytime they met and locked and worked out the puppies should be here round about from the 11th of april to the 14th of april so i can be at home to be with her if she needs me.
She's my baby i couldnt ask for a better dog x
Is there any other way i can tell if she is pregnant?
please any information is helpful thankyou x

not being funny but why on earth have you mated her in the first place ? thats one hell of a mix and not what i,d call a good one either ;0(

only way to be sure though is to get her scanned by a vet as untill 4-5 weeks you may not tell at all

Thanks nat, what do i need to do to see the pictures of your whippet?
Dee i mated rio as she kepted mounting my partner and our 2 little boys which isnt very nice for them, i always wanted her to have one litter as i think she will be a good mum.
I didnt want to mate her with a pure breed staffordshire bull terrier as in rio's head she thinks she's a staffordshire bull terrier her body is a british bulldog in the repect she can't run around loads and jumping up like the *!#%!@, she gets tired and needs to take a break (flopping herself down some where nice and cool).
And most british bulldog breeders are not willing to cross breed their dogs (so that was a no no).
Rio and rug get on so well they both have british bulldog in them which is better than putting a rottie with her (well thats what i think any way).
If you are worried about these puppies not being able to find homes and end up in rescue centers you dont need to as most of the puppies depending on how many puppies Rio has have homes already from friends and family members who know how well behave, good with children, other dogs, animals both dogs are.
People still ask me now why Rio such a good dog and i dont know weather its the way we brought her up or the breed of dog she is.
What i do know is how much both dogs are well look after and well loved they are and we will do every thing in our power to make sure these puppies go only to the best family homes.

Hi, normally one of the first indications of pregnancy is about 3 weeks into gestation when the nipples turn pink. If she is in pup then you should see her getting rounder by about 6 weeks.
It takes 63 days normally but some bitches do have their pups earlier, so be prepared from day 58 onwards.

Yes there are some nice people on the forum and some not so nice, if someone is asking for advice, then help them don't patronise...
My Yellow Lab had a litter of 9 babies 2 weeks ago, she did huff and puff initially in the first stages, but once the first couple of babies came she managed wonderfuly. My Whippet had to have a caesarian with the last litter she had, but every dog is different, but if someone can offer advice then I think it is nice to speak to someone on the same wavelength.

ahh bless your lab 9's quite a big litter for the first, did your whippet recover well from her c-section i bet that was scary did you just know somthing wasn't rite with the labour.
Rio was a litter of 9 and rug the male was litter of 8(i think i'll check that though).
its not like i thought right im going to breed her and not look into what might happen if she cant cope or doesnt help pups out of their sacks i spend hours reading and taking notes so if it does happen i have an idea of how to help her and what to do.
i brought rio as a cross breed and my friend brought rug as a cross breed so it doesn't matter what we breed them with theres going to be a mix in there, ive been looking at dogs for sale and its quite hard to come across a pure breed at the moment and where i got rio from said they were the best dog he's ever breed he sed alot of people have comment on how good they are with children and he breed a few different breeds and sed the bristish bulldog cross staffordshire bull terrier might of been a mistake litter but sold the best and even has people ring to see if he'll breed them again.
i dont what upset that person with me breeding her.

Annie my Lab -this is her 2nd litter, had 9 both times, this time they are Labradoodles, they are just getting wavy coats now, and their little eyes have just started to open. With my Whippet she has also had a litter before the c-section, she had the 1st puppy alright, but the contractions slowed right down after a while and nothing was happening, when she did contract nothing was happening, we lost that pup, but the vet managed to save 5 more. I have kept a blue/white bitch, she is 5 months now. Keep us informed over the next few weeks, how about a couple of pics as she gets a big tum?

Hi Dee, nice to chat to you, lets all try and keep civil with each other, and help with advice when needed. If it is your choice to have a litter with your girl, then by all means do it. Keep on posting the pics if poss as things progress. These are my 3 whippy girls.

i will keep you posted with how she's getting on she's such a lovely dog (my baby bless her)
ive attached a photo of dad he's on the lefted the bitch beside him is a pure breed american bulldog and you can quite clearly see theres a difference and she only a pup he is alot smaller.
did you mate your lab with a black poodle then to get all them black ones in there.
the whippets are a very stunning colour lovely to look at.

hi dee i would say do what you feel is right for your dog, i think every one who can being human, dog, rabbit or cat or whatever should have a chance at motherhood and i felt that rio was at the right stage in her life i know i'll do all i can to make sure the pups get the best homes they can get.
i will take a pic of rio's belly soon as her tits(boobies) at the back especailly the back 4 are a lot fuller and hanging lower but also soft to touch does this sound wierd lol
god it wont let me attach a picture grrrr

Hi cllmmllm

I bred my staffy bitch Amber, she met and tied with the male 3 times each time was about 20 to 30 mins. At around 4 weeks her back teats started to swell and became very pink. I had a whelping box especially made for her it took up most of my lounge and do you think the little mare would go in it ? not a hope in hell lol She had a very active pregnancy right up till day 59 when she went outside to do her business, she came back in went straight to her food bowl had her tea, walked into the lounge climbed into her whelping box and started panting within 20 minutes puppy number 1 arrived, within 4 hours she had 8, unfortunately we lost one, but the other 7 thrived. I too was criticised on here by another member for mating her as she wasn't quite 2, and it kinda put me off posting on the forums, but there are many good people on here like BonnyLee and Nobby and Kitty among some others that will always offer you some good honest advice, so don't take it all to heart, if there is anything you need to know or are unsure about just ask away as many are always willing to help. Good Luck and let us all know how it goes.

hi bonny lee i always am nice on here lol always give advice too :0) the one reason i asked was because of the mix it would be awful to see them in the wrong hands but as they already have homes lined up then thats even better and shows responsibilty too thats the only reason i asked hun :0)

climmllm i doubbt i,ll breed off her having worked in rescue for to many years i know how many dogs need homes thats my put off for one the other is 13 puppies argh lol she was one of 13 in a first litter and mum was a rottie dad the ddb so it wasnt expected so if i put her back to a ddb knowing me i,ll get 16 of em lmoa thats not good far to many to re home and far to many for her too

hi tracey,
thanks so much for your kind words it made me feel alot better bout breeding rio, she's such a lovely dog so good in every way even as a pup she never chewed or wet or pooped in the house, she really motherly to my 3 year old as they've grown up together i just wanted to be about to give her the chance to be a mum to.
sorry to hear that she lost one of her babies thats so sad bless her. x
ive been looking on ebay at the welping boxes, i wasn't sure what to for the best really to get a welping box or the puupy pens you can use as roon divides you can get as i corner off part of my lounge for her and put lino on the wood for and her bedding as rio never sits still for more than a few mins on a normal day lol what do you think?
i went out with rio this morning when she went to go to toliet and in with her wee i notice like some mucs (not sure if ive spelt that right) kidda like flem.
if your wondering why i was out they with her i was washing her wee off the patio she always does it right by the door lol.
Rio nipples arent really pink but then how pink is really pink?
Theres defnently some thing different about her since locking with rug.
Rio was mated on her 4th season which i thought was bout right from what i read so many people say not before their 2 and not over 3 yrs.
I dont see why people were nasty to you bout breeding amber its kidda up to you what you do with amber and you must of felt that she was ready and she proved you right by being a very good caring mother.
I would love to see some pictures if you have any?
I can't put any pictures on here at the moment for some reason i can't attach them

hi dee,
i would like to say without sounding nasty, that i brought rio as a british bulldog cross staffordshire bull terrier and i think it would be really unfair on the puppies if i had of mated her with a pure breed staffordshire bull terrier for the reason i have explain before that being a cross british bulldog after a while if out on a long walk rio would get tired and just want to lay in a cool spot and realx where as a staffordshire bull terrier will keep going. (those with staffordshire bull terriers will no what i mean)
So i took it upon myself to try a find a suitable mate for her, i look into pure breed bulldogs being a stud for her but most were unwilling to cross breed their dogs or were asking very high stud fees (£1,000 is a bit pricey).
Then my friend suggest rug who is a american bulldog cross british bulldog and very loving as well as behave, rug's owners also have a pure breed american bulldog bitch whos not even a year yet and to look at her to rug there's a lot of differences you notice like she's taller than him, slender and has a competely different shape head to rug if i can get the photos of him and her on here your see what i mean,so to me thats says rug carry's a lot of the british bulldog a little of the american.
Thats why we picked him to try and put more of what rio already had back into the puppies.(i know this may not work out this way)
I did look into mating rio with a british bulldog cross staffordshire bull terrier like herself but could only find her realtives,i found 1 with was pure white but to look at compared to rio carried alot of the staffordshire bull terrier.
i hope this has tired to make you understand i have sat a really thought about what i was doing before i jumped in and mated her.

What breed is your dog? i understand you not wanting to breed her for the reasons you've said and if thats how you feel deep down then i dont think you should breed her, whereas ive always wanted to breed rio it was more about when was the right time and who would be best to mate her with.
have you got a picture of your dog i would love to see her?

Hi cllmmllm

I found the whelping box worked for me and Amber because as the puppies grew and started finding their feet the box contained them better. I used to line one half with newspaper and the other with some comfy bedding so all i had to do was change the newspaper when they went to the toilet as appose to constantly cleaning the floor. Amber could also get out easy enough when she wanted a break from them and when they were big enough i just dismantled the whelping box and passed it on to a friend. Here is a pic of the puppies not long after they were born. They have all gone to new homes now and all the new owners have been very good and i get weekly updates.
