Do you think I could get a reliable car for £1300? What make? Are the prices of 2nd hand cars coming down or are they going up with the economic downturn?
Any advice would be welcome!

Thats a pretty vag question.

You have a budget thats point one, point two ect is how much are you willing to pay on insurance, then road tax and what mpg are you after, how fast does it have to be, what sort of size and shell type.

I am older and insurance is not that expensive and it is not in the budget amount.
Yes I know about road tax and I have accounted for that outside my budget
The more mpg the better!
I am not concerned with speed! Just good reliablity! Good condition!
I am flexible about size - big enough to hold supermarket shopping but not a huge 10 seater! Neither do Iwant a 2 seater sports car! (would not get one for my budget anyway! lol!)
The budget of £1300 is purely for the car!

Personnally Id recomend a mk2 ford fiesta 956/1.1l just check its not a rust bucket. next up would be to go for mk4 fiesta 1.3. escort mk4 1.4 or 1.6. These will return 30mpg apart from 1.6 road tax aint bad. as long as their not rusty. Their good cars and easy and cheap to maintain/even repair if needed. Susuki switfs are great basic cars 1.0 is a bit rattly but 1.3 are good cars. stay clear of 1990 on ward fords(except 1.3), skoda's,vw, audi, seat, renaults, vauxhalls, lada.
These are cars I have experience with lol
fiats can be had really cheep.
look at plenty of volvo's check for rust and services. hell you can pick up a nice t5 with that money.

Ford mondeo 1.8? I'm on my second one, reliable, lots of space, spares easy to get.
My neighbour has a 1995 estate version, over 200,000 miles, runs perfectly!
Larger cars like these are usually cheaper to buy than small hatchbacks. most have a heated front screen, which is great in the winter, and the air con is good too.
Just my two pence worth!

Thank you for the advice I would like a Mondeo but I thought they were out of my price range! I see a lot of old VWs around but they are very expensive secondhand - a lot more than the car valuation websites say they should fetch!
I often wonder with sites like E-Bay whether the seller is getting a mate to bid to where he wants to sell. I saw a VW Passat that wa supposedly sold come on relisted and no mention of it being sold to a time waster! What do you think?

goes on all the time. my freind has an immaculate w reg 2.0 auto estate mondeo for sale it was on auto trader and might even be under my items for sale on here. its up for £1800 i think but for £1300 I could make it yours. Excellant box and nearly new mot average miles (down side is incomplete service history) the prob with newer cars is when they go wrong they cost.

hi

for your £1300 you could get a good Pug 306 diesel Meridian with FSH
this has the r/c/l PAS e/w e/m a/c 1/2 leather interior dual a/bags etc
You prob not get the HDI for this money so it would be the 1.9 TD, a really good and proved engine well capable of 300K (I know been there)
ave mpg about 46 (thats over two years 30K mixed driving) but it would be liable for the £185 tax rate.

you could think of a VW, but for that money you could pick up a dog quite easilly.

I would avoid Rovers, they good cars but the spares situation is only going to get worse.

Al

mk2 fez I did say a solid one. as for mk4 I have yet to see a roten one unless its had accident damage. The mk 3/3.5s and 5's rust really well. Ive recently seen a lot of probs with the german stuff, mercs bmws skoda vws porches are pigs lol. Well within the price limit. I'll agree with jap stuff as long as its not a performance car. As I owned a jap sports car and it was expensive (well cheap for a super car really).

So Russell is it Nissan - maybe a Micra -because Honda and Toyota are too expensive! Also to get a Polo or a Golf, it would have to be as old as the hills!

any jap car, they aint as expensive as you think. youd get a 2000 corolla 1.4 16v for £1500. as for german the vws are expensive but thats because of the quality. so check the seats out as they use the same floor pans and running gear and are alot cheaper

to be honest no car is auctaully reliable. my dad once bought a brand new car and it broke down in under 4 miles. Its luck of the draw. But what I will say is the more complicated the car. The more their is to go wrong, the more specialist the repairs and the more exspensive the parts.
In all the years Ive owned mk2 fiesta's I've only had to do standard maintaince barring when my after market immobilizer went wrong I had to pay £100 to get it sorted. the engines have never given up. I have one at the moment that has a bit of a winey gear box due to poor maintance but it starts every time.

My Fiesta mk2 has run perfectly for the whole time I've had it, never broken down! Also the little 1.1l Kent engines are virtually indestructible and still develop close to 50HP after 21 years (mine does anyway!).
In fact, JR, I'm thinking of selling this one in the next fortnight or so if you're interested? (It only has 32,000 miles on the clock so has a good 10 years left in it!)
