hiya.just stumbled across this forum. Fot the past 4 months we have been towing a hobby exclusive 660 with a mark 2 Toyota landcruiser. Have towed from Manchester to portsmouth to London and beyond. Reckon i have been spotted by maybe 30 traffic cops(?) in that time and so far (touch wood) i haven´t been stopped by the boys in blue. My advise to anyone thinking of pulling a large van with a 4X4 is to drive really slowly, keeping well behind other vehicles, and set off late at night when the traffic is quiet. On this thread i read about some poor guy that had to fork out 17000 due to a tailgater going into him. I try to drive with such caution, so that i will never need to perform an emergency stop.. My combined weight must be around 6 tonnes and would rather take my time, and be super safe, than have blind faith in the breaks on the landcruiser, the van, and an emergency stop proceedure.... So. the next time you see a landcruiser hauling a hobby up the M1 at 55mph.....its probably me.....sorry!

Hello Phil,

No one doubts the towing capability of many 4x4's for towing the 2.5m width vans - it is just against UK law. It isn't until something goes wrong - it needn't be your fault - that insurance questions are asked. Driving without insurance, because that is what you are doing, carries a heavy penalty when caught, even if it is through ignorance.

What happens if a third pary is severely injured whilst you are driving your outfit and it is your fault?

Life is a gamble - fine when things are OK .............

Regards.

Peter

hi folks, i see my pal dan has joined, i owned a roma for a while, and yes they are illegal to tow. basically most of the tabberts, roma's and hobbys are illegal unless towed with a commercial over 3.5ton e.g. something with a tachograph! i have a tabbert which is 23ft not including the drawbar and 8ft wide. i towed it with a pajero and its fine ( albeit slightly illegal), basically if you want to chance it just drive carefully with legal lights and a reg plate and you should have no problems, most traffic plods cannot actually find which law you are breaking in their little book! its too much trouble for them to try, unless you force them by doing something stupid or unfortunate. i've towed thru notts, leics, lincs, derbys, and south yorks with no problems.
insurance should not be a problem, my tabbert is sited and insured thru adrian flux for £205, plus £38 for cris registration. the best tip i have is make everyone else's look easier to pinch, i.e. wheels off, on blocks, hitch lock, cris number on windows etc, the more trouble, the less likely!
my awning was from towsure, their largest in the orion range and cost £409 and fits very well (its full size) and annexes are available at £109 each.
hope this info is of use to some of you

HI TONY

HAPPY XMAS TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILLY,HOPE YOU ARE ALL WELL?

YESYOUR RIGHT RE THE LAW,ITS AN ASS
I HAVE ASKED 4 DIFFERENT POLICE OFFICERS AND THEY ALL SAID THE SAME - THEY HAVENT GOT A CLUE.......
3 WERE TRAFFIC COPS,THE LAW SAYS YOU NEED 3500KG CAPACITY TO TOW BUT THE VEHICLE PULLING SHOULD BE20% HEAVIER THAN THE CARAVAN
SO A SHORT WHEEL BASE TRANSIT CAN PULL A 8FT WIDE ROMA AT WHAT EVER LENGTH BUT IF IT WEIGHS LESS,A TRANSIT WEIGHS CIRCA 2000KGS AND A ROMA 762 WEIGHS 2500KGS YET ILL BET NO COPPER WILL PULL YOU AS HE WILL THINK THE VAN CAN TOW IT
ALL I CAN SAY IS BE CAREFUL AS YOU NEED TO BE MINDFUL OF OTHER ROAD USERS.
SADLY OUR LAWS DONT STACK UP AND DIFFER FROM EU LAWS SO AS EVER IT WILL TAKE A DISASTER OR DEATH TO SORT IT OUT ONCE AND FORM ALL !
I AM CONSIDERING BUYING A 7.5 TON LORRY !!!

REGARDS

DAN

I'm surprised these discussions on towing 2.5m wide 'vans (Hobby, Fendt, Tabbert, Dethleffs or whatever) are still continuing.

The law in the UK should be pretty well known by now; you need a tow vehicle of over 3500kgs GVW to tow legally in the UK. You do not need a tachograph for private use.

The problem in not complying with this requirement is not being hauled over by the police, or more likely VOSA, as this is pretty unlikely, as folks have reported.

It is the consequences that ensue should you be involved in a RTA.

BOTH your caravan and car insurance will be rendered invalid; Inc. Co's can't insure for an illegal act, whatever they may say or write to get your premium off you!!

You are then personally liable for any damages and if that includes a third party it could well be financially crippling.
If you are prepared to take the 'financial hit' then fine, but most of us can't afford to.

There are Landrover Defenders that are over 3500kg GVW, together with Fiat Dailys, Merc Sprinters, and some Transits and LDV's. These can generally be configured to have more passenger seats etc. so that they are less van-like, albeit more minibus like!!

I have seen a number of folks towing legally with American double-cab pick ups like Dodge RAMs and Fords etc. But I have just been informed that you must be very careful in buying a Dodge because they may be de-rated when imported into the UK.

Chap I met towing with a RAM 3500 was very pleased with his. Quite saloon car like inside and he used the covered pickup area for stowing lots of his caravanning kit. It was auto with a big Cummins 5.8l? V8 DIESEL engine. Cost a bit over £32K new.

It looked the dog's wotsits when hitched up to his WIDE T-A Hobby. And he was legal!

this is the reply from the DVLA i recieved, and the original email i sent to them to enquire about towing oversize caravans e.g. hobby's tabbert's roma's etc............

Thank you for your email.
If you passed your driving test before 1/1/97 you will have category C1E on your licence.
This will cover you to drive vehicles between 3500kg and 7500kg with a trailer over 750kg with a combined weight of not more than 8250kg.
As you can see, it is the weight of the vehicles that determine the categories required.
I hope this is helpful.

Subject: towing large caravans

i wonder if you can help???????
i'm finding it hard to get the correct info.
i want to tow a tabbert comtesse caravan (german), i know my mitsubishi pajero 4x4 cannot legally tow it, it requires a commercial vehicle over 3500kgs.
i have had a full car licence since 1993, so i can drive a 7.5 ton lorry, what is the largest vehicle i can tow the caravan with?, i would guess something like a new transit jumbo (4.5ton on tacho), caravan spec is as follows: twin axle, 8ft wide, 23t long not including drawbar, approx 1950kgs, fitted with uk spec lights tow hitch and registration plate.
is a caravan classed as a trailer when you tow it with a 7.5 ton lorry? the van i have is not strictly a caravan, its a living trailer with no bathroom toilet or sink, strictly a dry van as used by travellers, so it would be more like moving house.
we only wish to tow it to a site, not tour with it like a normal caravan, as it will be permanently sited.
i have used my 4x4 to manouver the caravan and the total length is approx 43ft, so a 7.5 ton would be around 55ft.
any assistance you can give would be greatly appreciated.
many thanks,

Correct information!! Tow vehicle OVER 3500kg. Re earlier post ...30 traffic cars in four months? Hell's bells, I travel widely every day and doubt if I have seen three traffic cars in that time frame other than actually attending an RTA. Plenty of "Traffic Officers" and a few VOSA. Cutbacks are "aiding and abetting" those who wilfully defy the law, ass that it may be. Red light jumpers, double white line overtakers and other offenders are a daily hazard who get away with their view of the law. We really have become, a nation of "sod you, I'm alright". P.S to all you who use vans. From 2007 speed limiters will be compulsory including retro fit to existing vehicles. Just hope it will be set at 50m.p.h.!!!!!!

well wht can I say.....

Looks like you been sucked into buying a caravan that you can't tow. I'm sure people have told you that you can but where will they be when you are pull over or even worries arrested for driving without insurance. Sure the Hobby caravans are nicce but you are about to move from a nice guy who is alway legal to someone who is on the dark side....

Is this fair.... No...
Are you areal criminal... nooo

But, if you vrash and god forbid you kill someone.... You will never look back and thank anyone for sellingyou the caravan. I have got a Hobby and yes I am legal. Ive seen loads that are not and I hope they never get in trouble. The UK law is wrong but it is what it is... You cant try to make a case that they should folloe Europen law and you wont be the first. God blest you and I am sorry to be the beerer of bad news..... Someone has missleeed you and you might lose money for being so trusting....

Good luck.

Hello Doc how long you been floating around on Preloved?

Would this be a twin wheeler RAM with an 8ft back on it? because the standard crew cab is not much heavier than a Shogun at 2.25T and only has a miserly half ton payload!?

Wouldn't want any confusion because it's a Yank? 3500 is pounds not kilo's

Hi Gary, I do look in here every now and gain.

Yes you are correct. To get the >3500kgs GVW it has to be the twin rear wheel version, with flared wheel arches to accomodate the extra wheel. This one is often not shown on the web sites so you need to know it exists and hunt out the small print!!

The thing was pretty big & wide itself and barely needed towing mirrors for the 8' wide 'van behind!! (He reckoned to get ~18mpg from the Diesel engine BTW!!)

I saw it on the Commons Wood CC site and access to it down Ascot lane is pretty narrow, but he obviously managed it OK.

The '3500' is a model no. I think, rather than any descriptor of vehicle weight etc.

I see by a previous mail that some one has a wiring diag' for a hobby 650. If poss' I would also like a copy. Obviously let me know what exp's are involved.
Whilst checking my OLD hobby on site y'day; I met a couple who had their "new" 660 broken into. Don't really know too many details; but I thought I would do the neibourly thing & enquire;- does anyone know of a supplier or s'hand dealer that might do front windows, [complete + frame] ?????
Whilst on; I have Two old; but clean & dry c'vans; & a T'tent for sale. Be ideal for 1st time tryer's; boot fairs; or as we did steam fairs & the like, saves taking a decent van on site !!! Would this be a good site to do an advert ??? or are their others more suited to the "budget" range.
Bit different to listening to towing problems ... HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL. Going to be busy this winter removing fridge & cooker that don't work to well. That should be fun, any hints ??? also may take out the "blow heating" unit and replace with a more "pleasing to look at" coal effect fan heater, once again any hints ???

Mine is a 1998 650 umfe and I find it difficult to get the fride out and would appreciate some tips from you if you woulldn't mind. Also can you tell me where you got the replacement. I took the fridge out of my 1998 710 a couple of years ago...Take panels off on outside of the van and the remove the funnel or flue as its called. open fridge door and on either side you will see some small white plastic caps...remove them as they are hiding the screws you need to remove which hold the fridge to the surrounding woodwork. Remove all gas knobs and then remove front grey panel...you will need to disconnect gas pipe at top of fridge ( right hand side on mine )..Disconnect eletrical connections and fridge should slide out..The heater element will be avaiable form most caravan accessory shops and the price will vay from around £14 to £25..Hope this helps..ps...have you tried Hobby sections on http://www.caravanning4u.co.uk Cheers Hobbynut

Many, many thanks for that prompt, clear reply. I think you will have saved me a lot of money there and I appreciate you taking the time to do that. I love my Hobby too but I may change soon back to a towable van as the site I keep her on is getting far too crowded. Thanks again
