Hi Stan,
I am thinking of purchasing a 460UFe Excellent easy. You say in your posting that some of these models do not have proper shower heads/separate from sink. Could you expand on this topic. Thanks Pearl.

Our 2001 460 UFE has a shower fitted and we understand that that is a factory standard for Excellent Easy models.

Beware of 'Special Editions' made for particular dealers where some features have not been installed to save on cost.

Hi Peter,

Showers can be factory ftted as an extra on some models as can 12volt systems. Normally howevr they are dealer fitted but i know of many folk who fit there own under instruction ( obviously a warranty issue may be introduced if not dealer or factory fitted)

Hi Ed

I can only go by my own and friend's experience. The Hobby 460 UFe Excellent Easy is a specific model and has a shower fitted.

There is a factory option 'For self contained on-site operation' - that provides an onboard water tank, battery and 12v system together with a higher rated water pump.

Much cheaper to have the factory fitted package than to have a 'DIY installation' whether by oneself or a dealer.

Hi Ed,
I have just this week purchased a 2004 460 UFe Excellent, on my invoice it states german spec, what do you understand by this as I thought all Hobby caravans were german spec, have I made a boob and won't have the spec I thought. My impression was that this model came with an all inclusive package, and I also expect to have a proper shower head as the wash basin is not in the shower room. Regards Pearl

Hi Pearl

Are you buying from a Continental dealer or from a UK supplier?

In theory, if you purchase from a UK supplier - e.g. Ambergate Caravans (The UK Hobby original importer)certain modifications may be made to comply with UK law e.g. flameproof upholstery and mattress, 240 v electrics with UK style sockets, UK gas regulator and perhaps, even the 12N and S plugs. One of the reasons why you pay more for a Hobby van in the UK.

The basic 460UFe Excellent Easy does come with most things as standard. If, however, like us you had the self-contained package you get the inbuilt FIXED 40 litre water tank, a 100 amp battery, a more powerful water pump ...
We also had the upgraded tyres, enabling an increase in payload, and heavy-weight stabiliser legs fitted.

We have now lived in our van for more than a year, out of the three years we have had it, and towed some 18000 miles.

Servicing has been carried out by an authorised Hobby agent at Fordingbridge, Hants. About £140-200 each year.

Very minor problems although we have had our front (over-bed) rooflight cover ripped off in high winds. £120 repair job. More recent vans have a smaller and stronger rooflight and you shouldn't have any problems with a 2004 model.

I hope this might help you.

Peter

Hi Peter,
Inporting caravan, collecting end of June from Hobbyland-Hexel. I am a little confused. Are you saying I need to order fixed 40L water tank and a 100amp battery as they do not come with the "all inclusive" package or am I being thick today (thursday morning 01.22am) havent gone to bed yet, so I think I am probably missreading, if not post me again please and I will order the extras. Nice to hear from someone who owns the same model "great". Thanks, Regards Pearl.

Please be very wary of E&l Ltd when you insure your vans. Thet would not pay for all the security devices damaged when stolen(allthough they wont insure unless you have them)this included, hitch lock, wheel lock,Alarm system,Brace studs etc. Then they wouldnt pay the recovery costs that were incured when the police impounded it,they wouldnt contribute or cover the holiday we had previously booked, and now to add insult to injury, they have sent a letter to us stating they will not be renewing my policy when it expires. My advice STAY CLEAR OF E&L Insurance Ltd. I will be posting to every Caravan forum I can find, not just to Hobby so let your friends know & teach backhaned insurers to treat their clients with some respect

Hi Ed,

Sorry to see the end of North West Hobby. We are still enjoying our 495UK which we bought last summer. Just wondering about fitting a gas water heater so we can have a hot shower with out hook up- any suggestions? Did you go online with the virtual showroom/caravan tours in the end? (Don't know if you remember us but we came up from Essex with our 3 kids and a black Multipla!)

Carlie

Hi Pearl

I've just spent 30 minutes sending you lots of information only to find that the Prelove server cut me off ......... so everything lost!

I'll try in snippits later.

The self-contained package is COMPLETE - fixed water tank, 75-100 amp battery, HD water pump .... .

Did you get a copy of the complete HOBBY price list? It is in German but easily translatable.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the message, Been worried all day thinking I had got it wrong, "thanks again". The price list you mention being in german, I have solved that problem with a translator technical term print out sheet, found it at: http://www.wohnwagen-lohmann.com/eng/dictionary.html

Question?
What kind of hitch lock are you useing on the Hobby 460UFe as I need to get one as I dont think my Cara-Lock make will fit and would hate it to go missing after we pick it up and take a short holiday in germany before returning home. If you would like to send me any information without loseing it, send to my e:mail [Log in to view email]

Hi Carlie & Ashley,
Yes we had Westhoughton sold out from under us , so to speak. The danger of turning a business around i guess but we took the advice you both gave us in chatting and are now internet based:
http://www.hobby-owners-club.co.uk being one that is apt, lol
We have had quite a few owners fitting (or having fitted) gas water heaters. I think we should do an article on it on the owners club site
I done know of anyone around canby island but could be a option to arrange to have it done next time you are on another UK wide adventure

Anyhow nice to see you and hope to discuss this matter in more depth

Regards

Ed

PS 360 degree system of available via one of our other sites but alas does not , as yet cover the Hobby range.

Excuse me butting in. A Bulldog mini Hitch lock will fit your van with the exception of changing one bolt. (instructions & new bolt in box). Mine cost around £70 last summer, just before my van was stolen, while it had the hitch lock fitted. However you will probably find your insurers insist on a hitch lock anyway. Make sure you buy the one intended for a Winterhoff tow hitch. Hope this helps, but dont rely just on the hitch lock.

Hi, I am purchasing a new Hobby in September from Germany (Jerensens) and planning to travel south to Spain possibly via Switzerland for the winter, as you are experienced travelers are there any problems with getting pitches in winter? Do sites close for the winter as they do in Britain? is it nessesary to pre-book? Any avise would be most welcome.
Pat.

Ed,

Good to hear you're still about. Visited the new hobby owners club site and was really impressed, would recommend it to other owners. I think the buying/selling facility will be great the more people that use it- mini ebay in the making!
Where are you based now? If we are up your way in the summer do you still fit bits?- just thinking about the gas water heater.
Anyway, if you want to mail me direct you can get our address from the hobby club site.

Take care,

Carlie

Hobby fit the Winterhoff tow hitch and there is a matching Winterhoff tow hitch lock, called RoboStop. It enables the van to be locked on to the car as well as being used as a security clamp. Our one defeated thieves when our van was parked in a motorway service station on the outskirts of Barcelona.

Hello Pat

If you have an e-mail address I can send you all the information requested. My wife and I purchased our new Hobby van in Germany - February 2001 - and have travelled via Switzerland to Spain each winter - including having to tow on snow, using wheel chains on a Peugeot 406.

I send the same information to Caravan Club members and the response has been quite positive.

Thanks for the warning, I was just about to contact them for insurance of my new caravan, collecting end of June approx, I subscribe to Practical Caravan magazine and noticed them advertising in the magazine, believe they may be an associate company, why don't you try complaining to them as I have found out their full title is Entertainment and Leisure Ltd their advert is in July 2004 issue page 161 "no I havent got the wrong month" subscribers get their mag's early. I noticed under basic cover they do not pay for the items you discribed, only pay out under comprehensive. You need to see advert for yourself, "find book shop where you can brows free". You can see what I get up to "Ha Ha Ha". Get your next insurance company to give you their http://www address so you can see what is included and what is not included in your next policy before signing up,after all its a free service to check out what is offered on a policy on-line.

Good luck with your next insurance company and happy touring.

Hi, thanks for the info on hitch locks I will contact Towsure to see if they do this bulldog model as they give very good prices, and yes we do have other devices, two wheel clamps and an audible alarm which we took off our old caravan.

Thanks again
Regards Pearl.
