If you look on the left handside of the fridge interior you should see a siliver sticker with fridge information on it..At a guess I would say yours could well be a RM4270 given the age of the van????...go to http://www.leisureshopdirect.com then enter site and and at top of page click on Gas, then look at left hand side of page and go to Refrigeration..then Dometic & Electrolux spares then heating elements and it lists various different ones...if your fridge is a RM4270 then the price for a 240 volt is £27.22p...if you search caravan accessory shops you should be able to get a non manufacturers 240 volt part for under £20.
Hope This helps

A nice quiet site which will take Hobby vans (ours is there) is the Caravan and Camping Club's Site at Windermere. It is beautiful and peaceful even when full. Give it a try.

HOBBY fridge removal. regarding my earlier question; I aimed to replace the fridge and cooker, which I knew to be faulty. I ended up removing the outside vent panels. Not a lot doing there, I came to the conclusion that the units had been changed, but by a "DIY"er. I ended up having to lift the sink, as the gas coupling to the fridge was on top of the fridge. The fridge was held in with "pk" screws thro' the side panels. The whole lot looked a bit suspect. Replacing all units ;- fridge, cooker, and sink unit with units removed from a previously scrapped van. interesting to see replie's . All the best jg

The thing with Hobby is that alot of the fitments are not made by Hobby themselves, they are " bought in " and then fitted. By knowing who makes what you can acquire parts from sources other than Hobby dealers and at a much cheaper price..eg chassis manufactured by BPW in Germany...running gear, brakes bearings etc made by Knott of Germany and easily obtainable in UK...sinks and taps by Smev.... heating by Truma...English 3 pin electric sockets available at all accessory dealers, and the list goes on..You can save mega bucks

FRIDGE saga. From the outset the fridge looked to be original, [especially as it fitted "around the wheel arch]; but it was in a bit of a state so decided to replace. The cooker was "ok" but doors starting to seperate; but didn't look like original. What raised my suspicion was the fact that I couldn't find the plastic blanks in the fridge, and using a long spatula done each side, discovered fixings that didn't show in the fridge. The way the "side" panels were cut nad fitted, was certainly not "proffessional" So I thought, get the lot out and replace with items as mentioned from another van. Trouble was when I started I thought I might have to take the van off the fridge; rather than the fridge out of the van. Was great fun getting it out the door !!! Also contemplating removing the hot air unit; and replacing with a "coal effect" fan heater. Reason is to make it look more "cosy and homely"; basically 'cause my 'er indoors has to "see" flames o/n/o, before she feels warm !!!!!!!! Not that we've really needed the heating on. Note this is an old van @86 I think; I bought it knowing there were faults with it; mainly as I/we like our c/vanning; it's given me something to do in semi retirement; and following rebuilding a Scammell Explorer; a bit easier on ageing aching limbs. Hope you enjoyed reading something a bit different . It can be good fun !!!!!!!!!! Regards jg

I too have a 1986 prestige which desparately needs a new bottom half door. The current one has fallen to pieces and has been screwed and pushed shut for the winter. Have you, or any one, any idea where I could get a replacement from as we cannot use the caravan with replacing the door. I can't find any spares for Hobby vans anywhere. Can anyone help please?
Thanks

Sorry but I don't know where to get parts other than on ebay. I live in Northern Ireland so any parts that might be available would cost a lot to post. I'm sure the good people on this forum will be able to advise you as they have been so helpful to me, a newbie.

Hi jg, you had a right old time with that one. Unfortunatly I don't have a garage big enough for a 650 si I'm going to have to wait untill I can actually stand outside for a couple of hours to do the grill etc. I'm very grateful for all the help ant the bit of banter too. Really nice people on this forum and I've had the hobby (and the internet) for years not knowing you were all a 'click or two' away.
I used to tour in Ireland so if you want any local observations on sites here in Ireland, please just ask and if I've been there I'll tell all. RogerP

Thanks for that Rogp. You are the first person in over a year to reply to a request for help. My husband has had several fishing holidays in Ireland and I am sure that if something were available it would be an excellent excuse for him to 'go fishing'. Thanks again.

hi Redman53; if you scroll back this page and previous page, there are a few names / addresses. If not try things like "caravan spares" or w/ever on a search engine. The c/van club did an article on s/hand spares, so their site might be worth a visit. The local paper will have adverts for "damaged "vans wanted; or of course yellow pages. It's surprising how many there are about; even main dealers sometimes have a s/hand shed out the back. BUT they've never got the right bit !!!
To the other 650 owner; mine's on a "permanent" site, disadvantage being 3/4 Hr away; and cramped inside when trying to work as I've got my workmate and a load of wood and bits. No power so rely'ing on battery tools, and the site is quite water logged being clay, but w/ever; Hey Ho !!! keeps me out of mischieve !!! Will be a lot better when it drys out so I can chuck most of the stuff outside out of the way. Cant really put the awning up "out of season" plus I don't have one !!! Well I will have if I get around to getting a biggun I've got altered. Needs extending by @ 1metre.

Hi Scammell,
Thanks for your comments, we too have ours on a permanent pitch in Cumbria (3hours drive away) and again no awnings after Oct until May. Therefore work is hampered with rainy weather, of which there is rather a lot of in the Lakes but the area is fantastic not matter what the weather. Most places I have tried do not have Hobby parts - any other make no problem. Hobby dealers only seem interested in selling a new van! If we cannot get the door fixed or a replacement then our van will have to be scrapped which is a great shame as it is dry and good conditions inside. A bit cluttered like yours but with grandchildrens stuff i.e. cots toys etc.
Thanks for the chat and will try your suggestions.

Hi, I was looking at a 650 and you are saying that it is illegal to tow. I have a landrover freelander and i was wondering if anyone who has one of these vans has actually been stopped by the police etc for being illegal. I have never been checked by the police or anyone else when i was towing and i wondered if any police actually would and if you would get fined etc for it.

Hi does anyone know if the law has changed yet regarding the size of hobby you are allowed to tow. I am planning the get a 650 kmfe and was wondering if it is legally to tow in the country yet i know it wasnt a few years ago. I have just phoned the police and all they seem to be worried about is the weight of the caravan rather that the width.

Sadly the law is still the same...it's all there on website http://www.ntta.co.uk then go to to the heading The Law and then to sub heading Maximum Trailer Dimensions..Its quite sad really as its legal on the continent to tow these " oversize " caravans behind large saloon cars. If you look on the website of both Hobby and Fendt you will see what I mean by the vehicles used in their adverts

To find your correct tyre size if you have your id numbers off the plate on you caravan and ring the Hobby dealer (there is one at Ambergate in Derbyshire) they will tell you what size you will need. Failing that take a wheel and tyre to your local tyre place and tell him what size and weight your van is and he should know what will be safe.
Hope you sort things.
