Hi that sounds great if there was nothing on the road of that size but there is. As well as that people are towing much heavier/longer vans with smaller vehicles that technically are allowed to tow such a load. The law can be changed by just one person starting things. It has been proven throughout time. It just needs people like you and I to do something about it. If we dont bother do you really think they will. Most of the people we are trying to convince dont tour around in caravan they stay in posh hotels. That is fine for them but I LOVE MY CARAVAN and the socialising that goes with it. Why should i be any different from the french or germans. I am not a criminal and have NEVER broken the law. I just want to be free to purchase a touring van of my choice and use it for the pupose in which it was made -TOURING and having fun. It is not as if it is huge static i am trying to tow. It was designed for doing just that. Our british roads are more than capable of allowing us to do this safely. COME ON BE A REBEL. Lets try and make a difference. How many of us can say we took part in changing a law for the better. Even if we dont do it. It will be interesting trying. My email is [Log in to view email] I have even put an add on ebay today to try and get more support. Have a look. It is under Caravan - Hobby Owners help change UK towing Law

Has anybody upgraded a Hobby caravan water supply from the submersible micro switched controlled pump to a pressurized system using a Sureflo Trailking pump or similar product which can run dry without harm? Any advice would be welcome.

There a petition just started to try and get this stupid law changed with regards to the towing width allowed in this country. please please please take the time to sign it as the towing law will never change if we all dont do something about it.

Don't forget in relation to towing Hobby's and the like that there is also a length limit involved here i.e. maximum body length of 7 metres not including the gas bottle compartment also needs tow vehicle with Maximum Authorised Mass ( Gross Vehicle Weight ) in excess of 3500 kilograms..This makes the Hobby 700 SMF dodgey on both width AND length..I have been living with this problem for the last 6 years and looked at all possibilities...Sadly I can't see anything changing

The other point that needs to be made is that the 3500 kgs does NOT refer to the unladened weight of the towing vehicle..It refers to the Gross Vehicle Weight or as it is known now the Maximum Authorised Mass which is the unladen weight of towing vehicle PLUS the maximum amount of load it can carry...For example the new Ford transit 17 Seater Minibus has an unladen weight of 2652 kgs ( its actual weight ) it can carry a maximum load of 1448 kgs when adding these two together giving it a Maximum Authorised Mass of 4100kgs..legal to tow large caravan.....

Hi Vicky,

I have read all the replies to this thread, and I have found the e-petition and signed it.

I think the best way to bring this to the governments notice is through the e-petition, when it has collected a good few signatures, then we should bring it to the attention of our M.P's.
Most M.P's now have email addresses, we could mail them with our views, how many M.P.'s actually know about this ruling??I'll bet it was passed in the early hours of the morning when our honourable friends were probably asleep. How about UK manufactures would they come onboard or would it cost them too much money to change production techniques??

One thing is clear towing illegally is not going to change the law, it just gives them ammunition to say caravanners are trouble makers and not to be taken seriously.

Phil.........

p.s do you know how much the caravanning/camping industry is worth in this country???

Hi all those questions are very relevant and unfortunately having just started this campaing i have no idea the answers. If you could maybe get some of the answers and Join the campaign that would be great. I have had quite a few emails now since yesterday but we have to get everyone we can to sign this petition or no one is going to take any notice. so please email everyone you can about this and get them to pass it on to everyone they can and maybe we can really get this issue noticed as at the moment, it seems to be only the people who are directly concerned eg the hobby owners and want to be owners. who know anything about it. Although that is still a lot of people. Welcome on board phil, very please to have you. Vicki. My email is [Log in to view email] for anyone interested in joining our growing campaing

Its not seats it comfort and principle. If another country can do it safely and legally why cant we. We are not doing this to be auckward we are doing this because it is our right. Not all of us can afford to or want to buy a minibus or transit van. And why should we if our 4x4 can do the same job just as well. Its not like we are asking them to allow us to tow them with mini's. A decent size 4x4 is perfectly capable of doing the job and as long as it is with its towing capacity and you can tow safely then what is the problem. I would even be happy for us all to have to take a caravan towing course in order to be able to do this. The caravan club do these courses all of the time. There are safety measures like these that can be put in place to allow us to do this with everyones safety protected. I as much as anyone dont want to see a hobby being towed by a mini or the like.

Hi everyone,

The issue of caravan width comes up over and over again on the caravanning forums, and has always been the source of much confusion. We have therefore just posted a message to our new blog, summarising the current situation, the implications of ignoring the law, and linking to Kaiko2107's camaign to get the law changed.

Hope it is of help.

Hi Ian,

Thats great thanks so much for you help. Hopefully one day we can set this issue to rest. I am also currently working on another issue. As if this one wasnt enough. The issue is regarding camp sites refusing entry to Hobby caravan. Has anyone had any experience of this. If so please post on here or send me an email at [Log in to view email]

thanks

Vicki

Unless you have the information in writing - forget it! 2.3 m width vans are the widest, LEGAL, that can be towed on UK roads with a normal vehicle. (less than 3500 Kg.). Wider than this and your insurance is invalidated.

HI; ref' your letter; the following may be the reasons; or some I've come across ;-
1} some sites don't like double axle vans; high on the "desireable to steal" list.
2} the name "Hobby" makes it desireable to steal.
3} NOT suggesting it is; BUT; if it's an "old" van, some sites won't take.
4} unlikely but I've had dissapproving comments about double axle vans chewing up the site when manouvering; [some times you cant drive round onto the pitch].

On the 230 wide rule does anyone have any idea how many people have been prosecuted for this versus how many people have caravans > 230 wide. I know that there are some people on this forum who have been prosecuted but given that some police officers including traffic branch seem unsure about the rules then it seems unlikely that people would be stopped PURELY for towing a wide caravan (> 230).

Ofcourse if you were stopped for something else, and gave the cops reason to start looking for other things to do you for then who knows.

Anyway I would be interested to know if anyone has the stats re prosecutions.

Hi,
Iv signed the petition for extra width vans and thought id add that my local hobby suplier assured me that it was legal to tow a 2.5m van, I argued with him that it wasnt and he informed me it was a 'grey area' of the law, this I thought was a bit unscrupulous as I know it is illegal.
I bought a 540 uk in the end but privately as if the dealer lies about the law how can he be trusted to be honest about selling a van.
I have had trouble storing the van as aspinalls caravans told me they would not have hobby, lmc or brandt vans on site his reason being 'I dont like them' so it now permanently sited in north wales.
Does anyone know how the cushons opposite bunk bed go to make the double bed as iv tried loads of ways but it just dosnt look right.
