Hi, can anyone help me with regards to insurance? I am looking to buy nearly new Hobby, the majoritry of people that sell this type of vehicle are travellers and require cash on collection, how do I secure myself from any type of problem with paying cash for a caravan and getting this vehicle insured?

Thanks

Richie,

Didnt realise about band G, my Hyundai is a 2.00ltr on a 2005 plate and is band F.

I thought the Terranno would be in the G backet.

I looked at a teranno before I bought the Hyundai but it was 18months old and the dealer was asking too much so I kept looking.

Hi,

Lets start at the begining.
1. Why would you buy a caravan off a traveller???
2. a traveller would not sell a nearly new Hobby unless it was dodgy( know what I mean)
3. If you wish to buy a caravan for cash, first of all note the chassis number and check it with C.H.R.I.S. to see if it is legit.

4 as long as the Hobby is 2.3mtr wide the caravan club will insure it for one.

Phil,

Yes, some small light at the end of the UK's ever deepening tax tunnel!

The actual date is for cars registered on or after 23 March 2006 with a CO2 figure > 225, making them G band.

Firstly insurance...no problem at all insuring a Hobby of any age or size with the CIS ( the CO-OP as it used to be called ) and it doesn't need to be CRIS registered.
Buying from travellers, there is really no need as there are plenty of companies in the UK now dealing in Hobby's...I would certainly do an HPI check if you are spending big money and also look at the chassis number to determine the age of the van, don't take the sellers word for it...Just this week someone on Ebay tried to sell a hobby claiming it was a 2001 model when in fact I spotted it as 1998 model and it has had to be withdrawn..if you need help with how to work out the year of manufacture then contact me and I will give you a list...There is a Hobby and Fendt section on http://www.caravanning4u.co.uk and its FREE to join

HI
I OWN A NEARLY NEW 8F WIDE GERMAN CARAVAN AND THERE ARE A FEW COMPANIES WHO WILL INSURE IT. THE CAMPING AND CARAVANNING CLUB, THE CARAVAN CLUB AND THE NATIONAL FARMERS UNION IF YOU ARE OVER 25YRS OLD. IF YOU ARE STILL LOOKING FOR A CARAVAN THEN MINE IS UP FOR SALE AND I CAN ASSURE YOU I AM NOT A TRAVELLER. IF YOU WOULD LIKE ANY MORE INFO ON IT PLEASE CONTACT ME.

Donna,

I am fairly new to hobby's and caravaning but I can tell you different sites have different electric ratings. IE some only have 5amp.7amp.10, amp and the best one is 13 amp, if you were on a site with say 5/7amp and you had the kettle/toaster/microwave/fan heater etc. on then it could trip the leccy when you switch something else on, I think you need to sus that out first, and if its not that then you might have a short on your heater.the best thing to do is put on the electricity and just swith the heater on if it blows thats your problem if it doesnt, then it could just be an overload due to low amperage.

Hope this helps..............phil........

Hi Donna,
Did you contact Ambergate by e-mail? If so, what e-mail address did you use? Their original contact address is bouncing e-mails.
Regards.

Hi Donna
I see you have been to Skipsea Sands, so one of the Hobby's you have seen was mine..The heater element in the Truma Therme is basically nackered..its probably rusted through..A bit strange really because mine has done exactly the same thing over the Easter weekend..The mains at Skipsea is 16 amp which is exceptional really and the Therme is only 300watts, so it will be the therme thats at fault..The guy you probably spoke to was Big Harry...a beard..dark glasses and looks like Father Xmas..I am just trying to acquire a replacement element but it looks as if its going to have to come from Wandahomes at Knottingley as they are the nearest local agent for Truma
Cheers

Hi Chris... Yes he did have a beard and looked like Father Christmas, we did telephone Ambergate and they said it sounds like the element or could be the electrics? Element will be approx £50 to buy from them, he explained what we should do... we spoke to someone called Nigel he`s lovely. I cant believe its gone we have only used the caravan 3 times and it was new registered end October 05...do it sound like that then? R you next to Father Christmas at Skipsy as i was talking to his neighbour also? Do you think it could just be the site as we had no trouble last time?

Hi Donna,

It is unlikely that your Truma element is u/s unless you have applied power to it without water in the system. My unit is still running fine after more than six years of very frequent use.

Some units are actually plugged into a socket! Check the fuse in the plug. Other units get their supply through a MCB. Check that this hasn't turned off.

The element can easily be checked with an electrical meter - check for open circuit. If you are unable to do this, get a male friend to do it for you - most will gladly help out!

If you log on to the TRUMA web site you can find a parts diagram that shows you the complete assembly - in bits!

I hope this may help you.

Kind regards.

MD

If the Therme is working OK now then it seems unlikely to be the element unless of course its an intermittent fault which may get worse..My element is well and truly knackered as it is corroded through with holes in it..there is a long and interesting story about this but it won't fit on here..Big Harry who you spoke to had problems with his Therme and had to replace the element when the van was 16 months old...The site mains at Skipsea are very sensitive and seem to be able to detect things that the vans electrical system do not detect...The guy you spoke to at Hobby UK was Nigel Gaunt this is the guy that I call Mr Hobby...Everything he tells you is spot on and I would be guided by the advice that he gave you..if you need an element then I would suggest that the price sounds a bit high to me...Am looking into pricing on this unit and will let you know.....my Hobby was the one directly opposite to Harry so if you're up there again give me a call
Cheers
Chris
