You have been misinformed! You cannot legally tow in the UK, with any vehicle under 3500Kg, trailer caravans that exceeds 2.3m in width. There are also restrictions with reference to internal length being less than 7.0m.
Of course you may be able to 'get' caravan insurance but if you are towing outside the law and have an accident you can be charged for driving without valid insurance.
If you want to follow the verbal information given by your Cleveland Police I would suggest that you write and request confirmation of that information for submission to both your vehicle and caravan insurers - wait to see their reaction!
Regards.

George,

Double check with Cleveland Police or the caravan club technical dept,

The 2.9 mtr rule applies to maximum towing width without an escort ( wide load) the 2.6mtr rule ( yes there is one) refers to the maximim width of a refridgerated van/wagon for thermal reasons.

Trust me I have spenr hours researching the 2.5 rule.

Phil.

Over the years I have read all the debates on this subject and to be honest I have only come across one person with a spine. This brave lady put this on eBay and instead of moaning has done something positive. This is what she has done:-
I am the proud owner of a Hobby Caravan 650 KFU
This caravan to me is luxury on wheels.
I just love it.
I love the caravaning life touring around with my Husband and two children who have a ball.
Now i Come to my problem
This is a touring caravan but unfortunately you are not allowed to tow it.
According to the UK Law (not European Law) you are not allowed to tow anything over the width of 2.3m with a normal 4x4/car
even if it is within its towing capacity.
You have to tow it with a commercial vehicle with a MGVW (Mass Gross Vehicle Weight) over 3500kg.
Which is something like a transit van or minibus. (Hardly meant for a comfortable family holiday)
I am just a normal caravan owner with no experience of the law but would like to have a go at trying to change it, for you, me and every other hobby caravan owner.
PLEASE HELP ME - SIGN THIS PETITION
http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/trailer-width/
When you click on the link above it will ask you to fill in your name etc. You will then get an email from NO 10. Once you receive the email click on the link and it will automatically add your name to the petition.
Please take the time to sign. I cannot do this alone. The change in this law would help so many people if it could be done (It has been known)
If you would like to help or just show your support please email me

OK, we sign the petition (remember this facility has only been available for a very short time - and he at No 10 is going and the new occupant may just shut this down!).

However, as things stand, we must follow the current law, if we wish to remain insured and keep our driving licence.

Regards.

Peter
(I learnt of this problem the very hard way - go back in the thread and you will find what happened to me!).

John i couldnt agree with you more. And being an owner of a hobby uk700 think that this law is a bit pathetic. I run my own transport buisness and I regaly tow mine on the weekends with a nissan patrol and like most people have said you dont know that their on the back.

But people on here seem to think that its the POLICE you have to be careful of well may be, but as you can see from this forum the police havnt realy got a clue and until you go digging deeper do they realise their mistake. In my opinion that is not good enough when youve had an accident and then you find that you are in fact braking the law and you lose everything. That aside the people everyone wants to be careful of is VOSA ( Vehicle Operating and Standards Agency ) They now have the power to stop you on your travels and trust me these people will, and these people also now the INs and OUTs of the law because as the name says its their job to now.

But yet again we see that the goverment want us to join the E.U but still want to pick and choose about the laws we accept and the laws that we dont.

So baring the above in mind be careful on your travels and dont look for the police look out for cars similar to the ford galaxy with the green stickers on and the word VOSA.

This will not stop me from towing my 700 on my holidays and if i do get stopped I WILL be going all the way as i belive this law is a breach of the British peoples Human Rights. Im sure many of the people on this forum think the same as me.

Talking about VOSA I rang up the local vehicle inspectorate and spoke to the manager who I knew and asked him about the law on 8ft caravans and he told me the law is now changed, but I will get back on to him and if true get him to put it in writing. I was in the garage game for 43 yrs and towed some site huts a lot wider than 8 ft with a 4x4 and there is no law on that Roy

Hi,

I have jsut purchased a 650 Hobby second hand, had it insured as a tourer and would really appreciate it if you could forward me a copy of the new towing regs.

Also, if you can also help, the caravan does not seem to have a 12 volt battery facility, can you please advise where I might get this sorted.
Regards
Erika

Sorry Erika, there aren't any NEW towing regulations. Basically, you can only tow your caravan with a commercial vehicle weighing over 3500 Kg.

The battery facility requires a ventilated battery box, charging unit suitable for 'leisure' type batteries (GEL type are best - in my opinion!) and then wiring into the existing 12 volt circuit.

Although you have the van insured, it is your towing vehicle insurance that matters whilst the vehicle is on the road. Check with your car insurers that you are covered to tow a caravan 2.5 m in width - as this is outside the UK law!

Hope this helps.

Peter

The new man/woman at number 10 will not shut this down. he/she now has to give us some sort of feedback as we are now over 300 signatures. Anything over 200 has to be returned with a comment from the PM himself. That is the law. So lets get some more signatures on the petition and show him we all mean business. It wont happen if we all just sit around and talk about it (as we all know).
