Sorry MD, there are lots of foreign registered trucks in the U.K. being driven by British licence holders. Dentresangle/Stobart and others have vehicles registered in many EC countries but driven by U.K drivers, The current driving licence IS an EC one! There is nothing to stop me driving a foreign registered vehicle providing, as you say, the appropriate licence and insurance is in force . Toleration, the word used by the Highways Agency, was referring to dimensional requirements and, specifically, to trailers/caravans as this was the subject of the post. The U.K. is now the only country in the E.C that restricts trailer widths to tow vehicle weight. Despite that, there is still a market abroad for 2.3m wide caravans and many models are available in both 2.3 & 2.5 widths.

Hello beejay,
Did you miss the posts from Phil and Nash on the 24th August and mine of the 30th?
However, as the admin closed this topic on width, towcars, insurance and legality a short while back, perhaps we too, should do the same and let the forum get back to more interesting topics to do with caravanning.
Regards.

Hi,

A question for all you seasoned hobby importers, When you purchase your new Hobby caravan in Germany and pay the German 19% tax can you claim this back in the UK? The dealer I am using insists that I have to pay the tax and then claim it back when I'm in England. Can anyone help? Does anyone know anything about this?

Thanks

Andy

The ifo I got when buying mine 2 years ago was that you either pay their tax or ours. The rate I was given (theirs) was 16% so I paid it
over there.

If you do find it reclaimable let me know!

Cheers

Hi Vicky,
If I were you I wouldn't go round boasting about breaking the law in the manner you are doing. It doesn't take much, once attention to your claims are noted, for a law enforcement officer to obtain your personal details from the Forum or IS Provider to initiate action against you.
You will have noticed, from Madge's message, that insurers are now more aware of the illegal use of underweight vehicles with 2.5m width caravans. You will also have noticed how the action is starting to bite in Wales.
No soap box antics, just plain common sense - lawless society or lawful society?
You are completely wrong about 'grey' areas. The law, as you well know, is quite specific in detail and what you are doing is illegal.
This information is getting around and prices for the larger vans are falling because of this.

Hi Vicky, Peter hasnt got his teddy out, he is trying to give good advice based (if memory serves me right) on some costly personal experience.
He has been there and got the T shirt! If you dont want to take it so be it but if you get involved in an accident, you will find your the insurer wont pay out because you are on the road illegally. Sorry there are no grey areas, just give them the facts in writing & ask them when asking for a quote. That could your £5.5 grand saving gone for a Burton and the rest. The judge will have one or two beers bought for him telling tales of a court defence based on good taste. He might/ should agree about your good taste in caravans but it wont stop him fining you.

Whilst on my favourite subject (beer) I hope this wont prevent you from sharing one if we meet (I might even buy the first round), like Peter I am not moralising, just telling it like it is. Good luck anyway.

Mac

Hi to Vicky and Mac,

Vicky, you definitely haven't read my earlier messages to the forum! I am a Hobby owner, in fact the owner of two HOBBY vans. Both vans purchased in Germany - one for use in the UK (a Prestige 495 UFe 2.3m in width) bought as a replacement for an earlier HOBBY and also one used exclusively on the Continent (a 650 UMFe 2.5m in width) and stored in France or Spain whilst home in the UK. I probably tow more in a year than you would in the life of your van (unless you do similar work to me!), indeed I have towed more than half the available Excellent Easy models over most of the former EU countries. I wont tell you what I pull them with - perfectly legally - as it might make your hair turn.

I learnt from a costly experience and have moved on ......

I know the quality of build in the HOBBY vans (I also know their weaknesses - there are several in fact!). I have been fortunate enough to go round the HOBBY factory and actually see my latest van being produced. I know how it is much better to have factory fitted accessories (OK may be a little more expensive) but much better than retro-fitted equipment, especially when problems do develop. I know what German Dealer service is like - excellent but expensive! I know the resell value of a Hobby is excellent - especially if it hasn't been used by smokers or pet owners ....... .

I can assure you I am only trying to be helpful, especially to those who are being misguided by private and dealer sellers who aren't exactly explicit with the truth regarding the use of 2.5m vans in this country. I love my work with HOBBY vans and the multitude of people I meet - both makers and users.

You would also be welcome to come and meet me when on site - most people recognise my vans without problems ......... !

As I have said before, happy and safe caravanning to all.

Peter

PS Although I would agree with you, Vicky, that the TD5 may be quite capable to do 'the job', it doesn't get away from the fact that it is an illegal vehicle for towing a 2.5m van within the UK by UK residents.

Hi Peter,

It is still illegal whether UK spec or not, it is the width ie 2.5mtr that is illegal unless you tow with the appropriate vehicle.

Hi Pete
It is possible to tow 2.5m wide vans in the UK but only with the appropriate vehicle. I hope the link provided will help you, please take it that a caravan is a form of trailer.

Hi Pete,
Regardless of model, if it is over 2.3m in width, there are towing restrictions in the UK. Check out the earlier forum messages.

I don't have any experience of this and i'm not sure that everything in the article checks out but worth a read anyway.

Bottom line - if it's ok to plug your devices in when you go on holiday then there should be no problem. I think you can buy a pack from hobby or certainly the dealers can to change the plugs for the UK ones that Hobby use when supplying a UK spec van.

You can buy from CPC, Preston an adaptor for use with the German sockets. The reference number is PL04047. It is a surge protected travel adaptor suitable for up to 10amps. It is one of the few types available with an earth connection - beware of many adaptors that are only suitable for dual insolated appliances and are without an earth connection. From CPC they are £2.45 + VAT.

You can also buy direct replacement sockets that cost £7.54 each + VAT and of course, the dreaded carriage charge.

You can also add standard UK 13 amp sockets in other locations, wiring back to the master switch/controller. This is quite easy if you are competent in working with 230V supply wiring.

Whilst doing your electrical work it is also worth fitting an ELCB immediately inside your van. Some Continental makes arrive with these fitted, other don't!

You shouldn't have any problems with either method, I've used both for many years.

Hope the above may help you.

Regards.

Adapters work fine, I have heard that others have altered them for our type later and after 3 years I am also considering this.
