If you look at the VIN plate it will give you the model number and also the chassis number which begins WHB..if you look along the chassis number to the right you will come to the letter F..it is the letter or number to the right of this that determines the year. here is a list S=95 T=96 V=97 W=98 X=99 Y=2000 From 2001 they just used numbers ie. 1=2001 2=2002 etc..You will notice that the letters U and Z are missing, this is because they were never used and deliberately missed out to bring in an easier numbers system from 2001

As you can see from the link that model of van was mid 90's. Hobby's were not as popular then as they are now and I doubt whether you will see many of that model in th UK. because Hobby's have been what I would call a bit of a " mystery " van..ie no CRIS registration and originally hardly any dealers, the " flyboy conmen " jumped on the bandwagon and started selling them but claiming that they were newer than they actually were. I spotted a Hobby 710 model on Ebay and they said it was a 2003 model which is pretty strange when the last of that model came off the production line in the year 2000. Sadly, whenever there is a Hobby for sale there is a distinct possibilty of a " con ". Careful checking would be highly recommended. There is someone on Ebay now selling a 2003 van but the pictures are of a 2008 van and are from the Hobby brochure. He admits that they are not of the actual van but says his is the same, no its not and somebody is in for a mighty shock when they buy it
Cheers

Hi all

some a$$ hole has been breaking into the caravans where we store ours and has completely destroyed the window of our 540uk hobby. Luckely this was all they done. They never done anything to the inside(thank god). The tarbet next to us was completely wreaked!!! with all the windows, door, fire and even the sky light.

I need to find a replacement window for the van. It is the window to the rear on the same side as the cooker but not the one at the cooker! It is the one at the seating area approximatly 50'' X 30'' sorry I didnt havent a tape with me. So if any one knows of a place I can get a replacement please can you let me know.

Many thanks G

As suggested you can contact Hobby Uk or Ambergate Caravans as they are often called but looking at the dimension you quote I would make sure you are sitting down before they give you the price. It will not be cheap..Other AUTHORISED Hobby dealers in the UK get everything via Ambergate anyway as Ambergate are the Sole UK Importers. Now if we are talking secondhand it will be tricky to get one and may take a while but they do come up for sale from time to time on Ebay. two popular sellers for Hobby parts on there are " waynevanman " and " blackpoolbelle123 ". The link below will take you to the current offerings of " blackpoolbelle123 " but it may be worth contacting her and telling her what you want

The Larger Van (2.5m wide) do not attract UK VAT. It is however payable on the sift furnishings within the van but this still represents a large saving.

When I priced buying a van from Germany the savings against the samller ones 2.3 wide were quite significant but against the wider ones the saving were hardly worth it when you take the transport costs etc., into consideration. This is of course because of the VAT situation.

It is always important when pricing in this way to ensure that you compare eggs with eggs.

You can buy a van from Germany for less than a UK spec van but you will have the issue of plugs, gas, fire retardant upholstery, electrics to contend with and when you price these additions with the German delares it all brings the price up.

Continental vans being used in the UK by foreigners are not required to
convert their electrics before they can be used here & everything works, so does a British hairdryer used abroad. Do check with an electrician for your peace of mind but the only thing I have ever required is an adaptor not a transformer. This is because our so called 240 volt system is actually 230 and the continentals use 220, not exactly poles apart? You can buy a bag of adaptors for a tenner and a litre of flame retardent spray for upholstery for £16. Did you know that fabrics lose their flame retardent characteristics with washing? There is an awfull lot of scaremongering put about by those with a vested interest because they dont like the competition. Door on the wrong side? Spin a single axle thru 180 degrees on site pitches, double axle use an end of row pitch. Dont forget that British made vans on the continent are in the same boat, its not a problem. Sad to say but I bought a Hobby (euro spec & the legal 2.3 m wide) having driven miles to exhibitions etc look ot our British ones. My only complaint is in the shortage of recognised servicing contractors, the van itself is very well made.

Cheers
Mac

Surprisingly, the Euro electrics in the Continental vans are far safer than those in the UK! Why, you might ask? The mains input switch is double poled and therefor breaks the circuit on both line and neutral. If you find that the on-site electrics appear to be reversed, turn over the two-pin continental type plug - all should be OK.

CPC of Preston sell packs of UK to Continental 2 pin + earth adaptors. Make sure you get those with the earth connected inside the adaptors - cheaper ones are frequently without an earth connection and really designed for dual insulated products e.g. razors.

In theory, the upholstery should all be fire-retardent, particularly the foam use in seating and mattresses. Yes, it is possible to 'fireproof' material using a spray but it is usually not as good as fully treated materials.

No problems using Continental vans in the UK or on the Continent. I tend to spend more time on the Continent than in the uk.

Yes, servicing can be a problm. Avonbridge Caravan Service Centre in Hampshire are reasonable. Do make sure that you are specific about the work you want carried out - they can be over zealous at times. They are an approved HOBBY guarantee workshop. Ambergate, the original UK importer and main dealer, at Ambergate in Derbyshire also provides a good service facility.

Although I have had several HOBBY vans over the years, I've had a Burstner (as well!) for the last two years. The build quality is as good as the HOBBY and they, too, can be bought abroad much cheaper than in the UK.

Enjoy your caravanning - and your HOBBY.
