I have changed all my electric sockets to the British 3 pin system at a cost of around £5 per socket. I did this as the Continental two pin and the use of these " adapters " fail to conform to British wiring regulations.
Institute Of Electrical Engineers Wiring Regulations also known as BS 7671.

The point ythat I was making on comparing like for like was that there is a difference between what you buy from a dealer and what you do yourself.

If you retro fit the mods to your van that's not the same as buying it from a dealer/manufacturer who will warrant the work etc.

Also can you please stop this 2.3 legal nonsense.

2.5 m wide vans are NOT illegal in the UK.

The regs are to do with towing them with the correct vehicle.

You are scaremongering people about this issue.

Its about time we stopped playing around with this one Ritchie, people can lose a lot of money over it. Sure you can pull a 2.5 metre wide van in the UK, perhaps you can tell everyone just how many cars, 4x4's ( ie personal transport) can do it legally? I dont know of any that weigh more than 3500 Kg which they would have to so what is your point? Not many people want to go on holiday using a small lorry to tow with, and you will need one to meet the legal criteria. For those that may be confused the detail can be found here

That guy was a nutter. He posted all sorts of weird comments. Never could work out if he was from Gibraltar or just a troll. Eventually, his posts stopped.

Hi BeeJay,

I think you must have read the wrong paragraph in the thread URL that was given.

The THIRD entry was from a holiday friend I have known for many years through the Caravan Club. His report and references were correct and he hasn't ever really got over the loss ......

Regards.

I'm not at all confused about the law and the towing regs.

The 2.5 m wide caravan are NOT illegal in the UK it's simply illegal to tow them with the inappropriate vehicle albeit it's unlikely that you would get caught, but i don't want to start that discussion again.

When the vans are parked up or not in the UK they are perfectly legal.

They are perfectly to buy and own.

Many people site the larger vans and rarely if ever tow them and even if they broke the law whilst moving them, the insurance would cover them whilst static etc.

I'm not being pedantic i'm simply saying that the vans aren't illegal just illegal to tow with the wrong vehicle.

Personally I think that this is wrong and the law was never designed to cover caravans but more likely to stop builders towing large items of plant with vehicles of the wrong weight.

The thread which was posted is very amusing but doesn't really inform us of much new other than the fact that some people have towed 2.5 m vans with vehicles below 3500 kgs and not only have the gotten away with it but the Police don't seem that interested.

Granted there have been reports of people who have been done by the cops but very few.

I'm not condoning breaking the law but I have asked repeatedly on this forum for people to tell me how many they know of that have been prosecuted etc.

To date I have no replies.

There's room for all out there and by now I doubt that anyone who uses this forum is in any doubt about the law.

If you break the law you break the law and that includes every time you exceed the speed limit and a variety of other things. Should we all stop driving?

The point again is that 2.5 m wide caravans are NOT illegal in the UK.

Perhaps you disagree with me on that specific point. I wasn't making any other point.

Hi Richie
Nice to see for a change a positive feedback, as you say it is not the width of the van that is illegal but only the type of vehivle you tow with.
I have a 2002 Hobby 560, and tow it with a 3ltr showgun sport, and to date have not been stopped by the police as you say i do not think they themselves are paticurly bothered.

Obviously if an accident was involved whilst on the move on the roads i am sure this could turn out to be a differant matter, i have discussed with my current insurers and they have assured me the vehicle and car would be covered.

I was one of those that sighned the petition on the width law and current towing regs in order to get the laws changed, as you may be aware this petition was recieved reviewed and unfortunatly turned down i do have a copy of the adjudication but need to find it, but the exscuses given in the reply were feeble to say the least,

As you say Richie some of the comments are misleading and scaring people of purchasing this type of caravan, which are in my opinion excellant quality and far superior to some other British make out there.

Again thanx for a positive feedback, makes a change to see a more productive responce and like you I would like to see a list of people that have been prosecuted ??????

Cheers
Pipster.

Pipster,

don't think we really want to stir up another hornets nest, not after the last time!

Recently the ROI gov wanted to ban incandescent light bulbs from sale but were told that under European law it would be illegal to ban something for sale that was legally available elsewhere in the EC. That's the jist of it anyway.

It is of course subtley different but I think that the anomally should really be persued with our MEPs.

From memory your petition was to the House of Commons ??

In any event I will continue to use my van legally in the appropriate parts of the country (Ireland) and as you say continue to enjoy the wonderful quality and comfort of my excellent Hobby caravan.

Happy Camping

Richie

I have just purchased a new 08 560 kmfe, could anyone help with a easy way of getting water into the onboard tank, I am currently using a watering can filled from my aqua roll, does anyone have the simple answer?

Hi, I have a 635 UK and use a 12volt pump with pipe connected to a cigar lighter. I used to have a long wire for the car but bought a 12volt starter pack £12 which has cigar lighter fitting, light, jump leads and compressor for the tyres. Great buy and now use a short 12volt wire fills in seconds from aqua roll. Hope this helps the pack last for weeks on one charge. saves drilling into your new Hobby too

The easiest way is to fit a Whale connector kit - hose and 12v electrical connection in one unit. I was able to drill through the side of the van, using the template provided with the kit, and then carefully cut out the required rectangular shape. I removed about an inch of polytyrene insulator from around the opening and fitted four wooden pieces to make a support framework. I use sealant to make a solid waterproof joint.

Initially, I took the 12 volt line supplying the original pump and inserted a changeover switch between onboard and outboard pumps.

It takes more than a few seconds to pump 40 litres, about 8 gallons, of water from the water carrier to the onboard tank.

It is easy to overfill the tank and experience leakage through the onboard tank air vent! Having been distracted twice, whilst filling and getting leakage, I fitted a magnetic float micro switch in the onboard tank and the outboard 12 volt supply line. Now, I don't have any problems.

It isn't a difficult job if you have the right tools and plan your work. I took less than two hours from start to funish.

Waudby's supplied the parts for about £30.

I should add that with this method you don't have to worry about when you run out of water, just top it up from outside. Likewise, no messing around in the dark or when it is raining trying to work outside.

Simplicity is the keynote.

Hope this helps.
