If you remove the large cap from the inboard water tank you will see a pipe sticking up from the base. This pipe unscrews to allow the tank to drain.
Also the tank will overflow through this pipe long before it fills completely.

Not all Hobbies have this arrangement. My Hobby has a tap near the bottom of the fixed onboard tank, short side. This, in turn is connected to a length of 19mm plastic hose that passes through the floor. There isn't an overflow pipe as such fitted - the air vent pipe may siphon off the water if you overfill!

Hi, I would appreciate any help available on the following problem. I have a 540 UF and the toilet taps now only works intermittently. I have checked the wiring diagram & it looks like the pump is on the same circuit as kitchen tap which works fine as does the electric flush on the toilet. There is a faint click each time you try to use this tap but it doesnt work. The other question is how do you get to the underside of the tap to take a peek?

Cheers

Hi, we are considering getting a Hobby caravan as they are sensibly priced and look the business inside and out! We have been told by various fellow caravanners that all the Hobbies are illegal in the "width" department. Is this true? If so, are there any that are less than 2.5m and if so which model. Also, folk keep telling us that many campsites will turn us away. Please put me out of my misery as I am looking to buy one now and need some answers. Thanks

If you intend to tow with a privately registered vehicle weighing less than 3500kg then you are unable to tow a 2.5m width caravan in the UK.

There are plenty of 2.3m width caravans that you can tow legally.

It is true that on the Continent some campsites do not permit twin axle vans. It is also true that some campsites do not permit the use of a 'van' type towing vehicle on site.

However, there are many sites that will accept anything!

Enjoy your caravan and caravanning, just stay within the law whilst in the UK by towing a van that is 2.3m (or less) in width.

Hope this helpd.

Any of the UK manufacturers - their production is keyed up to meet UK laws!
Continental vans: many makers including Hobby, Burstner, Hymer, LMC make vans 2.3m in width or under. Check the individual web sites and you'll see the range! Just make sure that you don't get the 2.5m details if you want to tow in the UK with a vehicle under 3500kg unladen.

How big is the family? Ages are particularly important here, as is build of children.

Where do you intend using the van most - UK or the Continent?

hobby caravans seem to be the biggest caravan mine is just under 2.3 wide the legal requirement for a caravan should not be any bigger than a 2.5m due to new towing laws, when we bought this caravan we looked at a lot of vans we found that there was not enough room for a family to be comfortable until we looked at the hobbys and when you attatch the awning this its self is like another room handy for the kids.

Hi
Going back on your last email although Madge is correct it is illegal to tow a van over 2.3 mtr, but only illegal if you tow with wrong vehicle.

I just wish people would make this clear as it can put a lot of people of buying this well made and much sought after caravan.

Pipster may be right in certain circumstances about being able to tow a 2.5 mtr wide van in his message but I am afraid he is guilty of the same issue he complains of with the article by Madge. He does not go far enough & mention that there are very few if any cars or 4x4's that can do it legally. You actually need a vehicle that weighs over 3500 Kg to do it & being legal is as important to others as it is to yourself. No one is covered for accidents if you use the wrong vehicle as you invalidate your insurance. This and other sites have gone over this point endlessly in order to save people financial loss or distress, its a pity it isnt a legal requirement to inform buyers of the law. Anyway regardless of what some salesmen may tell you & no matter how much some may wish it otherwise, here is the law as it stands again ~

Maximum Trailer Dimensions (This includes caravans)

Towing vehicle up to 3500kg GVW
Length (excluding the coupling and drawbar) 7.0 m
Width Maximum 2.3 m

All the best & stay safe

I believe that some people have posted messages on this forum that suggest that their insurers are happy with their towing combination e.g 2.5 m wide van with a vehicle <3500 kgs.

It is incorrect of you to suggest that this is never covered, some policies may well cover it.

Of course as you say it is illegal to tow a 2.5 m wide van with a vehicle <3500kgs but this law is obscure at best and many police men are not aware of it. I am quite sure that this law was never designed to cover caravans and as such the police aren't really that interested.

For people who intend to tow mostly outside the UK then as long as you can get insurance I would say that the extra comfort available with the bigger Hobby vans is more than worth it.

The Hobby 540 range and other numbers lower than this are 2.3 m wide and in some cases narrower. 560 and above are 2.5 m wide.

Thanks for that. I have a 2.5 Tdi Land Rover Discovery, I imagine that this vehicle is not acceptable to tow the Hobby with then?

Thanks for that, looks like the old Disco won't tow one then ! Shame ! Would be a bit embarassed towing with a commercial vehicle with my 4 kids in too as that's when some camp sites (I imagine) turn you away as they think you're Gypsies ???

Ok thanks for that info. Unfortunately don't think I dare get a Hobby then, can't risk breaking the law and not going to tow with a commercial vehicle !!!! I am gutted but at least there are quite a few of you who know a bit of the background on this to inform us novices.

Hi, I know strength wise it may tow a Hobby ok but it's the "legal" side of it that bothers me as legally my discovery should not tow this width of van.

Hi Ali
We have never had any trouble using our Hobby in the UK or in France but I admit I do inform sites when booking, not one has even queried it yet. We bought ours at the end of 2005 and the catalogue of that time shows that the 540 (cabin) size was as big as you could buy in the 2.3 width, it is also single axle model. You would need a vehicle weighing over 3500 Kg to pull a 2.5 mtr wide caravan, this is just the way the law is in the UK currently.
In case you need other detail the Caravan Club issue guidance on the amount of brake horse power your car engine needs to get the most out of the fuel you buy, worth consideration these days. They give roughly 40 bhp per ton of the combined car/van weight. Also that an unladen tow car should still be about 15% heavier than the van to give a good margin for safety, but never less.
Try this site for Hobby specification, I dont know anything about their service. http://www.hobbycaravansuk.co.uk/about.asp
Hope this helps

I tow a 1998 Hobby 495 Prestige (2.3m) with a Vauxhaul Vivaro van and have used lots of sites in this country with no problems at all, some sites do prefer me to park my van away from the sited caravans but not many.
The only site I know of for sure that I cannot use is Flamingo Land who do not allow Hobbies and I believe they do not allow vans either.

Just in case of any misunderstanding this is in reference to the Gypsy reference and not the width problem.
