Had the van back a couple of tome for a service and they were very thourgh. Only problem is the distance from Airdrie. There is a hobby dealer in Larkhall but he quoted me twice as much for the service as JG did.
Are you looking for a new caravan or 2nd hand? I have a brand new 08 560kmfe, bought from a dealer in Germany where we had an extra bunk bed factory fitted making it (theoretically) a seven berth. the kmfe would possibly suit your family, especially if you make full use of the awning, we have 3 kids and find this layout really suits us althought we spend a lot of time in the awning. The kmfe comes in the 560 or the 500, I know you are bothered about the width issue, but I and hundreds of others have never had a problem. You can view layout here. http://www.hobby-caravan.de/index.php?activ......reihe=Excellent Andy
Are you looking for a front or rear cycle rack? There is a front (A frame mounting) specifically made for the Hobby vans - there is one for sale in the classified adverts complete with illustration! You can purchase these units from any of the German Hobby dealers and have them shipped over. (Camping Centre Voepel is a good source of an excellent catalogue and supplier of Hobby spares at realistic prices and provide a rapid service - I have used them for spares and accessories for a number of years - oh yes and new caravans are discounted). The front fitting one is suitable for DIY fitting and can be mounted with butterfly nuts on the fixing screws. The rear mounting unit should ideally be fitted by a Hobby dealer as it is essential that the fixings pass through/into the correct body structures and that sleeved screws are used to avoid compressing the body panels. Front one is fine on the long A frame and doesn't add significantly to the towball loading. The rear mounted one does affect the loading on the towball - lightening the load which can/may effect stability. Do take note of the loading spec for either of them, particularly the rear mounting one, as overloading can have an adverse effect on the water ingress warranty if there is a problem with leakage. You should make sure that any rear mounted cycles are covered well - road filth can disguise the bikes. Likewise make sure you have the appropriate reflective warning square and that your lighting and number plate are still visible when cycles are loaded. Hope this helps. Madge
I notice that someone has already suggested this but the 500kmfe is a 2.3 M wide 6berth van. fixed bunks rear, fixed double front and u shaped seating making a double (suitable for children at any rate). Of course the 560 kmfe is more spacious because it's wider but as it's a 2.5 m wide you probably won't want to consider it. It does however accom 6 (2 Adults and 4 Children) very comfortably. Happy hunting Richie
I've been quietly watching this forum these last few weeks and thought I would now add my twopence worth. 1. There is always going to be a comprise when selecting a caravan. Very few vans will accept six in comfort especially at meal times and perhaps, more importantly, when it is wet and even moreso if the children are strapping teenagers. Awnings do provide extra space, but at considerable extra cost on the larger vans and who puts up an awning when touring with just one or two-night stops? 2. Following the comments about insurance, I checked the wording of my policy and sure enough, in the small print on the motor insurance policy under terms and conditions are the paragraphs that Madge has mentioned regarding 'use of vehicle' and the legal requirements. Whilst I am covered for third party claims if I am speeding (the law requires this cover under 'Third Party' cover) and I may even be covered whilst towing illegally for third party claims, neither my comprehensive cover for my towing vehicle (Land Rover Discovery 2008) nor my caravan are valid if I have an accident because the loss will be down to my negligence in not complying with the legal requirements. I'm not insured with CIS but with Zurich. I am now going to dispose of my 2.5m width van - probably on e-bay in the next few weeks. 3. Surely, anyone advising someone to purchase a 2.5m width van for general road use in the UK - using a tow car which wouldn't meet the legal requirements, is committing an offence under the new trading laws that came into effect at the beginning of this week. 4. We complain against MP's not sticking to the rules, we complain about Tony Blair and the Iraq war and his not sticking to the rules, we complain .......... Perhaps those of us (myself included here) with 2.5 m vans being towed with vehicles outside the law, should reconsider the consequences of an accident and comply with the UK towing regulations? 5. There was a petition put to the Labour Government, supported fully by most members on this forum, which was rejected fully. The Government response was quite reasonable when their response was read in full. OK. This is almost like the kettle calling the pot black, but following consultations with my wife and two children we are going to sell up our 2.5 m wide van and buy a 2.3 m. version. We can easily get a new Hobby, in under two weeks from the place in Germany that Madge mentioned. Special House price, need I say more? We always wanted a holiday in the Black Forest of Germany and now is our chance. Has anyone had issues with the ferry companies of going out with just a car and then returning with a new caravan? DD in a wet and windy Cheltenham

you woulnt happen to have urls or links to the web site in Germany you mentioned. Your comments on the rear mounted rack are very much appreciated, and ill not be trying that one myself. Ill look for the front mount, but as i have a 4x4 with spare wheel on the door, i didnt really want to create any more probs opening my rear door, and for some reason, fouling the van handbrake and jocky winder. My wife is also desperatly trying to find a Hobby Parasol if youve ever come accross one. thanks again nigel
Although some of the advantages (exchange rate etc) have meant that he no longer operates, I bought my first caravan using a go between who would for a price collect your chosen van from Joeressen's and bring it back for a handover in a service station. He did this on a regular basis (he outsold the outlet one year), so I cannot imagine there is much of an issue with your intentions. Although I had no problems, nowadays I would definately go myself and the take a short break. This would give the opportunity to check the unit out properly. Good hunting! Mac
These are the links that were given on the forum some time ago, I don't know if Madge has anything else: http://www.camping-voepel.de/english.html http://www.camping-voepel.de/ As you can see, the top one is in English and you can e-mail in English. Hope that helps. David

just spotted your tripple bunk. I asked my dealer about it at the time that I bought my van but they weren't aware of it. Is it comfortable for the children? Was it factory or dealer fitted/ is it available from Hobby? Is there an extra window at the head end of the bunks? Was it very expensive to fit and do you think it could be retro fitted? Thanks Richie
just sent some pics on your email. Frank
