Hi Cathy
Taking up your point on plug convertors I have searched the product list of a company mentioned on Page 47 of this forum to find out what was meant by an earthed unit which you also refer to. I did find one that was fused, expensive and could be used for unearthed consumer units, (see photograph) and wondered if you or anyone could confirm if this is the "the one" please?

Cheers
Mac

Hello Mac,

Simply put, you can get adaptors that fit into the standard european socket, as fitted to most Euro vans, that only use the two pins L and N. These cost about 75p. You can go online to http://www.cpc.co.uk to see them.

CPC also do an almost identical looking adaptor, to the one above, but this time the earth pin is also connected. Last time I bought some they were about £1.50 each. You can readily tell the difference - there are slots on the sides of the plug that contain the metal earthing connectors.

They are nothing like the multi-purpose travel adaptor shown in your photograph, which appears to be designed for razors.

What was the name of the company on page 47?

Take care.

Cathy

I have changed all my electric sockets to the British 3 pin system at a cost of around £5 per socket. I did this as the Continental two pin and the use of these " adapters " fail to conform to British wiring regulations.
Institute Of Electrical Engineers Wiring Regulations also known as BS 7671.

Hello smiff,

The conversion from continental to UK sockets, replacing the original fitted round sockets - so that they actually fit the circular cutouts made by HOBBY now cost just over £12 each. If they are fitted by a service centre they charge £20 + VAT for fitting EACH socket. Not exactly cheap.

Your comments about not meeting IEE regulations is correct - I actually passed comment about this in my earlier message:

"If you use a convertor - Euro to UK - be aware that the cheap ones don't have an earth connection. Officially, you shouldn't use these in the UK."

I am NOT an electrical specialist but I have adaptors that have been in use some time. They are always in the sockets when the van has the annual service and there has never been a query raised - although the 230/240 v system is always checked.

I did understand that the convertors that I use do meet the current regulations - indeed they are specifically marked 13 amp 230v. They are designed to only enter the socket one way - hence overcoming the problem of the standard L&N only adaptors designed for double insulated items - such as a razor.

Attached are some pictures showing these different adaptors. The square one - no earth, actually has written on it 'Not for use in the UK' - 'Only for Continental use'.

The other one (two pictures) shows the earthing connections for both pin and side connections looking at the plug from the pin side and from the 13 A socket side. It is clearly marked for 13 amp 230 v use.

Sorry about the cardboard ring that I had to use to stand the unit up onto its two pins!

I have been lead to believe that the double pole switching, which is used in Continental vans (not those converted in the UK to UK wiring) is considered safer than the single line switching used generally within the UK.

Are there any electrical experts out there who can clarify on my comments, please?

Cathy

Hi Cathy
Sorry about mistype (page 74 not 47!) where Madge also refers to CPC. I telephoned them & an assistant advised that she was only permitted to point me to related products where I would have to make my own choice.
Here I located something that looked the same as in your photograph but with extras (see photograph). These could be kept for other uses or discarded but this does seem a bit of a waste. The cost inc vat for 1 is £3.06 or £2.88 for 10, am I on the right track?
I will wait for the outcome on regulation regardless but this one does seem to safer than the basic model. The description supplied with it is as follows ~

A compact travel adaptor that incorporates surge protection for use in Northern and Southern Europe, USA and Australasia and a host of other countries

Power on indicator

Does not convert voltage

Regards
Mac

Hello Mac,

That looks identical - they are produced by MasterPlug - but my ones were obtained as single units, no add ons. It was some time ago, and if you get extras I guess that is about right for pricing.

I'll have a look for MasterPlug on the web.

Hello Cathy

Just an update, I wrote to CPC asking if they supplied the plug only and they have referred me to another supplier. Costs are £3.83 inc vat for 1 but £1.76 for 10 however there was no image to view in their catalogue.

Having explained the potential market for these items to the salesman he was persuaded to send me one free, so fingers crossed.

Cheers

Sorry to confirm your bad tidings Bigmitch. There are many who use this forum in the same boat as you who might wish it otherwise, however the key word in your question was "legally". If you follow this thread back I am sure you will find reference to legislation now in place to protect buyers in this situation. How it works I cannot say but hope it is of use to you. There is also masses of data to be found to tell you why its illegal.

Cheers

Hi BigMitch/Kenny
In the hope of helping keep you legal and removing the finacial risk you might pose for others due to invalidating your insurance cover, I did the leg work for you gents. Try page 77 & reading the letter form MD (Madge) 27/5/08, the second para., its up to you to whether you follow it up.
I might add that there is no one on this forum who could help you if you get caught breaking the law & no-one but you is going to pay the bills if you have an accident. Sorry if this seems blunt but "risking it " when others may suffer is not so nice either. I understand the law has been reviewed recently and is staying as it is whether we like it or not. Having towed my van (2.3) down the A82 toward Glasgow in heavy traffic, I get an idea of where the law is coming from.

Cheers

I have the blue wheeled water tank.
Today I discovered that water has been leaking out the top of the tank where the pump is located. This seems to be happening whenever I turn on a tap.
It looks like the pump draws up the water and some of it leaks out around the red pump cap (quite a bit of water).
Has anyone had this problem in the past and also do you know if there should be a seal or gasket around the pump cap. If so, I do not have one and would like some help in sourcing one.
Thanks for any help.
Much appreciated.

Hi Everyone,
I duly got my free sample but it had not for UK usage so its back to square one. The problem as I see it with the adaptors with a metal strip that is in contact with the earth pin on a 13 amp plug, is that I dont understand how this then "earths" to anything else or doesnt it need to?

Most two wire units I have seen are usually plugged into a socket which is earthed. Can anyone help?

Cheers
