We have just bought our first van a Avondale Perle but we love the look of the Hobbys and would have liked to have bought one as our next van.
So are you saying that all Hobbys are over 2.3m wide and even the smaller ones that weigh around 1200kg you need a 4 x4 to pull these.

Sorry its taken so long to get back but we have been on holiday.
That would be great if you would be able to give me 2 suppliers.
I thought there was no chance of ever having a Hobby.
Thanks Debra

I have just returned after collecting my Hobby 540UL from Germany. The trip went without a hitch and I saved almost £4500 against the English price. I would gladly pass on my contacts/info to any interested parties.

Be careful, you could be dragged into a VAT trap by bringing in vans for other people! Peter

Peter, Thanks for the tip, if the the customer pays direct for the van and I just get paid for my expenses that should solve the problem.

Hi Stan
That may get you out of the trap but you are still providing a VATable service. You may find your insurance would not cover you if you have only S,D & P cover. You would also need to have actual caravan cover whilst towing the van - who would be liable if you have an accident and the caravan is written off en-route? Do you take on responsibility for checking if the van is 100% OK on collection? Who pays to take it back if there are problems that the new owner thinks should be covered by PDI or warranty?
Do your expenses cover wear and tear and also cost of living?
Regards.

go onto caravanning links site, choose your manufacturer, from here you can find all the dealers in Germany and even see their stock list, for Hobby and Fendt try Ernst Caravans in Ettenheim, not far from Strasbourg, they speak English and are very helpful.

Do a Google search on the particular manufacturer(s) you are interested in. Obtain details of Continental suppliers from their web site and then make contact via e-mail. That is all that I did and it worked really well.

Hi Stan
I think some replies on this system get screwed up! I replied yesterday. Here are some observations to be considered:
You would be acting as an agent for the purchaser. Does your vehicle insurance cover more than S,D&P? If not, you could invalidate your vehicle insurance.
Would your expenses cover 'wear and tear' on your vehicle together with subsistance allowance? These can be classed as VATable.
Who is responsible for the loss if you have an accident with the caravan?
Do you accept responsibilty for the PDI carried out by the supplying dealer?
Who is responsible for any faults under warranty. Who takes the caravan back (and who pays) if there is a problem?
I know of one person who kindly brought a van in for a friend and was out of pocket to the tune of 4210 Euros because of problems. A good make - LMC - to boot.
Some would say let Andrew, of German Caravans in UK, accept the responsibility and pay him the £1000 all inclusive delivery - with warranty! You can still save substantial sums with him - he knows the pitfalls.
Regards
Peter

An excellent supplier is located near Monchengladbach in Germany. Their website is http://www.joeressen.de It is a family run business who deal with Knaus and Hobby and both brothers speak English, whilst their father still oversees the business he built up.

I would be very interested to know when you purchase an official UK spec Hobby ie with UK electrics (easy to do yourself) and fire retardent foam in the seating, who actually does this work, is it done at the factory in Germany (which I doubt) or does the UK importer do it?. Or is this a load of old b******s!.

When you buy an official UK spec Hobby, who converts the electrics to UK spec (easy to do yourself) and who fits the fire retardent foam in the seating. Is it done in the factory in Germany or is it done by the UK importer!. I suspect this is a load of B******S, does anyone know the answer?.
