I've recently had my rear brake discs and calipers replaced and have noticed that my engine overheats and has gone into the red section a few times. This doesn't happen when driving on the motorways, mainly on local roads. My car is a 2001 TDdI.

I'm not sure whether this is due to the rear discs not being correctly fitted, or whether its something else. Any ideas guys?

Thanks in advance

if the rear brakes were sticking on, it could cause your engine to overheat, but I would expect it to get worse on a motorway if that was the problem.
If you are stuck in traffic, the fan should cut in to keep the temperature down.
If the fan isn't working, then it would overheat.

Over heating Deisel now theirs somthing new.
After a gentle drive, feel the wheels for excesive heat each pair front and rear should be the same temp. But not hot. If hot you may have a problem their.

Have you checked the water level to ensure correct level at cold ?

does this happen on tick over with some engine reving ?

Does the fan kick in ok ?

When it last had a water system change if ever was anti freeze added ?

hi

check the water flow from bottom to top of rad. feel the bottom hose and top hose, temperatures should be the same.
If you can't get to the hoses feel the rad (but not the side with the fans! just in case they cut in). The rad should be even temp all over any hot and cold spots indicate that you have a water flow problem, assuming you have already checked the thermostat its time the rad had a good flush through failing that replacement.

It would probably be a good idea to have a garage check your water pump and thermostat. i had a faulty water pump which eventually blew my head gasket on the exact same car. if you know what prices ford charge for this work you will see that a hefty bill will be involved if this happens. and a lot of garages dont want to know you if you take a mk 3 tddi in with cylinder head probs. i ended up having to get a refurbished engine replacement. dont let that happen to yours
