Hi there ,
I have an 02 Berligo multispace that has 45000 miles on the clock. It has recently been having trouble starting first thing , taking a couple of minutes at least to fire up.Once it has started there is no problem re - starting until the next day.I have been told it is probably the glow plugs that need changing.Could anybody out there confirm if this is the correce diagnosis of my starting problems ?

I posted this on another website and it might relate to you.
Check the glow plug light stays on for about 5+ seconds so they are heating properly.

Hi
I have a Berlingo 1.9d 600 1999.
It has a few probs with elecs and yes, clock is one of them.
When turning ignition to heat glow plugs they trip out at the relay, I think there is a bad earth somwhere as I have tested the plugs and leads and these are all ok.
I have also checked the relay and this seems to be ok also.
I am just about to resolve an issue today with the brake lights, when applied my front side lights are coming on as well.
Heater switch no longer works so I have wired it direct to the battery as a temporary measure with an isolate switch in the cab so it only works on 1 setting (FULL ON).
Has anybody got a clue as to my first problem as this getting annoying.
It only does this on occaisions so the earth problem sounds about right.
It seems to be dragging the battery down so not enough power to heat the plugs so they just trip out.

Any suggestions will be welcomed

Thanks

Steve

The glow plug light does stay on for about 5 seconds.I can start the car but it takes at least 60 seconds of constantly turning the engine over before she fires up.During that 60 seconds quite a bit of smoke comes out of the exhaust.I am going to try a new set of glow plugs.I have had a quick look under the bonnet and it appears that there are a few parts that have to be removed to gain access to the glow plugs.Has anybody any advice regarding best way of changing glow plugs or is it a job to be given to a local mechanic ?

hi the glow plugs are quite easy to change just undo the wire of the top and they unscrew just like a spark plug so you should be able to do it yourself and just repeat in reverse when fitting just watch you don,t over tighten

Thanks Alan , I realize that once you get access to the glow plugs that they would be easy enough to change. What concerned me was is there a lot of components to remove from the top of the engine to gain access to all four glow plugs.

Hi
It is a diy job that wont take much time.
You could aways check the plugs before removal with an ampmetre.
They should all give off about 1.5 or there abouts.
Remove the cables linking the plugs and then put one rod on the end of the plug then the other on any other metal surface to get reading.

Thanks Rugby Red . Have you any idea how big a job it is to remove the items on the top of the engine to allow access to the glow plugs on a Berlingo.

Hi
On mine I can access the plugs with an extended socket without too much difficulty.
Unsure why you have parts too remove.

Thanks for the info mate , but on mine you can only see one glow plug , the other three are hidden under top engine covers etc.I have only had a quick look so hopefully the job shouldn't be too much of a problem
