i can drive very well and have years of experience, but ive only ever held a provisional, ive passed my theory with flying colours, i just want to take my test, so how can i get a driving instuctor to let me use hes car without them wanting to get loads of lessons out of me first, as this is obviously good for their bank balance, but not for mine, is their another way around it without costing me a fortune? j from brighton

hi

suggest you ring around a few insrtructors, (small independant ones)
tell them you have been learnig for a while and that you would just like brush up with a 'few' lessons and then take the test.

They will then be able to take you out, around the various test routes and also asses you before they let you loose in their car for the test.

You must remember that, you want to use their car, which is also their livelyhood, and also if they enter you for the test it will record against them as to the result.

Most independent instructors will be open to do this, I just had a colleague who is from the US and needed to obtain a UK licence as she could only use her US one for a year over here, her instructor was fine about doing just a few lessons and then putting in for the test.

Al

yeah, but don't forget, until you have passed the driving test, anytime you drive a car on the road, you will need a qualified driver in the passenger seat, and "L" plate's on the car, im not sure if they have to be over 21 or not

full license for 3 years tommy. so normally 21. believe its 21 to be a qualified instructer.

I remember this law being brought in back in the 80's so the 21 rule has been around for a while now.

a good start would be made by not treating all driving instructors as if they are dishonest! for every "dodgy" instructor, I have met a dozen " great drivers who only need a couple of lessons."
You have "years of experience" but have never taken a test? How, why?

tjp, My nan drove for 40 odd years without a full licence. Some how my grandad managed to keep his license after a Stroke and stuff. So she then drove him every where. 5 years later he lost a leg. Still he had a license. She continued driveing till the day he died. has never driven since. Even when being stopped when my grandad was over the limit (alchole) they never had any problems. Dont suppose they expect pensioners to out their defying the rules. it must have been 15years that my grandad shouldnt have had a license.

Hi Bas, yeah, I know that it goes on a lot. That was my point really, he was implying that driving instructors are dishonest, whilst most of them (myself included) are (or were) totally professional. Our business relied on it!
At the same time, he sounded like he was driving illegally himself. Maybe he wasn't, but it looked that way to me.

fair does jtp. I told a guy he was never gonna pass his test, Unless he got a new instructor. This was about a week 10 days ago whilst doing 45mph down a carrage way. He had been in the lane of carriage way and exited roundabout into lane two of carriage way. Correct, but shouldnt have been their in first place. Then there is no attempt to move to lane one though it is clear 4/10th of a mile I'm still stuck behind him. we have hit a speed of 45mph on speedo so about 41mph on a maximiun of 50mph road. Nothing for 1/2 amile ahead but about 10 cars pilled up in lane two, behind. I loose it, pull up inside tell this guy to get a new instructor, tell him his instructor he f***ing sh** and drive of in lane one. At the next roundabout he comes of again in lane two. It a Overtakeing lane. ???????. Lol SORRY ON ONE. I know a couple of good instructors. but most I see teaching students very poorly. I e they end up in wrong lane. Instead of getting them to go where the lane tells them to, They get them to pull across traffic and this make students think this is acceptable. well its not if your in a turn left only you turn left and find a suitable place to turn round or an alternative route. rant over lol. Ps I m sure your a very good instructor. I cant do it as I m not a good driver, because I cannot tollerate peoples in abillity to drive. Yet I very rarely make mistakes and if I do Im always on the ball for oppoligising lol. how ever i do have a certificate for advanced motoring course lol.

I no longer teach, but did for 8 years. loved it at first, then gradually got fed up with the numpties on the road.
I agree that the advanced test is well worth doing. It really helps, to have your driving assessed by someone that good.
I took it 4 times, and loved every minute of it. My examiner for the ROSPA tests, used to be the chief instructor for cars AND motorcycles at hendon police college! He'd clearly forgotten more about driving than most of us will ever learn, lol.

Yeah, but they have six months full-time training for that Bas.
When I was told that I had acheived a class 1 pass, the feeling was like winning the lottery (almost!)
The examiner said that his main way of assessing a class 1, was to ask himself whether he would let the driver give his wife and children a lift.
Not how he was supposed to do it, but as good as any method that he was told to use.

bas fully loaded/trained, now that would be something, lol.
i fully agree bas, loads of Muppet's have more money than sense, the number of 20 -25 year olds i see driving evo's, everything is a race it seems, they pull out of my road at breakneck speed to travel 25 yards if that, before jumping on the brakes to go over a raised up zebra crossing, lol

lol. tell you what it was great owning a practical super car, but I got so peed off, at not being albe to drive the car to its limits. I think there should be more organised cheaper events for the driver enthuast. The m25 would make a great track midnight till 4 am every saturday lol. with drifting practice at the services. sweet, now if only i could become primeminster. pmsl Allow people to get it out of their system, then if caught speeding they could loose this priverlage.
