fsh wouldnt go a miss and make sure it doesnt have the stupid size run flat tyres (and rims) that you cant get tyres for unless your willin to pay the earth (TD230/55ZR390)

Rear suspension esp if its got a tow bar fitted, all electrics are working, just general wear n tear there really is not a lot that go wrong with them.

Though tryin to sell it on might be a pain as its a 4 litre, so try n get it for a bargain

Nige

Hi Burt I was looking at buying one of these last year until the fuel prices went through the roof ! so I didnt bother.
However there are differences in the 3litre and 4 litre v8 models over the other ones, most notably is the steering system has a steering box and arms rather than a steering rack some people reckon there is a slight loss of sharpness in the steering but personally I didnt think there was anything in it for day to day driving.
Also make sure it's the later v8 engine if it's an E34 5 series if it's the E 39 you should be fine.
The earlier v8 engines had nikasil liners in them which in itself is a better lower friction material than the normal cast liners but due to the high sulpher content in UK fuel (at least right through the 90's anyway) it destroyed these engines buy causing terrible bore wear problems.
Normally it was a case of a comlete engine or at least a short block to cure this.
As I said the later engines are fine.
Another fault that I've encountered with E39 5 series is troublesome instrument clusters by way of canbus fault codes being registered and this can cause all sorts of problems but it's luck of the draw really as some of them never have a problem.
If you can find one try and get your mit's on one with the "telematics package" as this has the TV,Satnav etc and is a nice extra also rare but you get a 6spd manual version as well which is quite impressive, I've driven a couple and they are perkier than the auto.
Engine wise they are known to need the odd waterpump or so due to the plastic waterpump impellers that seems to be rife in a lot of german cars in the last 10 years or so.
Obviously brakes, suspension tyres etc are beefed up accordingly so prices are a bit dearer than say a 525.
If you are getting the car for buttons then all the above doesnt matter as you can just run it till something major packs in then throw it away otherwise make sure it's got service history.
My views... lovely car to drive when it's all working right and superb on the motorway but forget fuel economy when pressed hard ! but hey if your thinking about this you aint fussed about economy.
The way road tax is going hardly anybody working class will be able to afford a car like this soon so If your gonna get one make sure it's pre 2001 to avoid the big tax increases.

These cars have a control module for each door and believe it or not you can do a diagnostic on them and run actuator tests with the appropriate equipment e.g. move the mirrors, move windows up and down, {{lock and unlock the doors}}.
I cant remember if these models had a key hole in the passengers door as most cars seem to have that deleted from them nowadays but if it has try turning the key in that door manually.
Also another thing to remember with a 150k car is the wiring going through the door to the A'piller can become broken occasionally or short out due to constant opening and shutting of the doors.
It could be a fault with the module in that particular door causing it to lock the door due to dampness or a bad solder joint making and braking.
I do have to say that these cars are complex electrically so just bear in mind that when you investigate allow plenty of time !
