BMW E36 Automatic gear change lever

The push button under the auto gear change selector has stuck in and so there is no locking between drive and all other gears (& Park!)- can I repair this in any way? The cover over the top seems to be sewn on so not so easy to look at ... Is there a diagram anywhere on the web I can look at to see how it works? Thanks in advance
