I have 2 chips, 1 repaired by autoglass, one caused today.
Newest chip will be classed as within line of vision (although it's not in mine).
This will definately be an MOT failure (previous repaired chip flagged up on amber sheet). As the cost of having a company like autoglass fit/repair this will be quite expensive, I am thinking of going to breakers yard and picking one up myself. Is replacing a windscreen a DIY job, and if so, can anyone advise other parts (i.e. seals)/ tools, even methods of doing so

Thanks! :)

WARNING:
ALWAYS WEAR GLOVES AND EYE PROTECTION WHEN WORKING WITH THE GLASS CUTTING TOOL AS THE CUTTING OPERATION MAY PRODUCE SPLINTERS. EAR DEFENDERS SHOULD BE WORN WHEN USING THE FEIN CUTTER.

Remove

CAUTION:
Disconnect the battery negative lead.

Note:
Should the ambient temperature fall below 10ºC, heat the cartridges for approximately 15 minutes by placing them on a warm radiator, or by using a heat gun set at approximately 25ºC.
µ 1. Heat the adhesive if required.
2. Remove the grille assembly, cowl top outer (refer to «Operation Number 43 230 0»).

µ 3. Open the front doors and locally remove the secondary weatherseals (one clip each side).

µ 4. Pull off the windscreen weatherseal.
5. Raise the hood.

µ 6. Disconnect the two heated windscreen multiplugs and ground leads and thread the wiring clear of the car body.
7. Remove the A-pillar trims (refer to «Operation Number 43 616 0»).

µ 8. Cut along the sides and top of the windscreen using the Fein cutter fitted with blade number 6 39 03 076 01 6.

Note:
If a heated windscreen is to be refitted, care must be taken to keep the cutter low when cutting in the area of the heated windscreen connectors.
µ 9. Cut along the bottom edge of the windscreen using the Fein cutter fitted with blade number 6 39 03 079 01 2.
10. With the aid of another technician, using suction pads, remove the windscreen.

Install

CAUTION:
Avoid touching the trimmed surface as this will inhibit the new adhesive from bonding.
µ 11. Remove the excess PU adhesive from the aperture using the Fein cutter fitted with blade number 6 39 03 113 02 2.

Carefully trim the remaining PU adhesive from the window aperture to leave approximately 1 mm of trimmed PU adhered to the bodywork.
12. If the original glass is refitted, remove the excess PU adhesive from the glass as described in the previous step.

µ 13. Fit new locator blocks (adhesive backs).

µ 14. Fit the weatherseal to the windscreen.

1 Push on at the corners and work down the sides of the windscreen.
2 From the centre, push on the weatherseal and work out to the corners of the windscreen.

WARNING:
TO ENSURE THAT THE PU ADHESIVE CURES, IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT ALL BONDING SURFACES ARE FREE OF ALL MOISTURE.
µ 15. Using a heat gun, apply warm air (25ºC) to the window aperture and glass bond line to remove all traces of moisture.
16. Prepare the glass, window aperture and trimmed PU adhesive in accordance with the instructions supplied with the adhesive kit.

Note:
Discard the first 10 cm (4 in) of PU adhesive as this may have a reduced working time.

Note:
To avoid water leaks, any breakage in the continuous bead should be overlapped by 20 mm (0,75 in).
µ 17. Apply the PU adhesive in a continuous bead of between 8 and 10 mm height to the windscreen flange along the bond line.

µ 18. Fit the windscreen.

l With the aid of another technician, use suction pads to carefully lift the glass and align it in position over the window flange.
l Firmly and evenly press into position.

µ 19. Should the ambient temperature fall below 10ºC, use a heat gun at a distance of approximately 5 cm from the substrate and apply warm air (25ºC) continuously for 15 minutes (inside or outside the vehicle).
20. Refit the remaining components in reverse order.
21. Check for leaks and correct as necessary.

yeah the one's before the face lift pre-96 model's were the old type, you could do them yourself with a piece of string, and seal it with gutter sealant, those were the days, lol

hi

check you car insurance policy, mine only has a £40 excess on the Pug (£60 on the yank) for a screen replacement if repair (free) cannot be made.
Damm sight cheaper and less agro than doing it oneself !

Only ever had a screen go once, at night in middle of Germany (on the autobahn between Koln and Frankfurt) at night, never saw what hit it but it made a hell of a bang (SD1 Rover). Had it replaced by a German firm linked to the AA 5* over seas cover, middle of the night by a man who didn't speak a word of English, he even shared his flask of hot coffee with me.

Al

£40 excess that's good, mines £75 was £60, its starting to get expensive now, so if you have to change it, only do it, if its about to fail or has failed its mot, or if it's dangerous or illegal
