Transit fuel problem??

I have an old 89 transit 2.5 diesel.
The problem I am experiencing is that it suddenly stopped in a manner that suggested fuel stravation, and would not re-start.
The AA engineer diagnosed that the fuel lift pump had failed.
I replaced the lift pump and while I was at it I dropped the fuel tank and checked the feed pipe was clear.

It ran ok for about 100 miles and then suddenly the same problem occurred.

It will re-start this time, but sometimes will cut out again immediately, and sometimes drive for a mile or two - but very lumpy - before stopping again.

It has been suggested the diesel injector pump could be the problem.

Does anyone have any other thoughts about what could be causing the problem, and if it is the pump (a Lucas) are these repairable, as it seems they could be very expensive and are very difficult to get hold of.

can we take it that you have had the motor for some considerable time and it has driven ok prior to this problem?

I've had it about 9 months, and prior to the first problem (when I replaced the lift pump) it drove fine.

As an update, I took it out the other day and it drove perfectly OK for about 7 miles, then the fuel problem re-occured. I managed to drive it home again, but it kept stopping - when I did manage to get it going again it ran very lumpy and stopped frequently.

hi

next time it stops, try removing the fuel filler cap, do you hear anything?
I was womndering if the fuel vent to the tank may be blocked causing a vacuum in the tank.

another possability, when was the fuel filter last changed ?

Al

Interesting comments!!

It has a new fuel filter on it - I changed it at athe same time as replacing the lift pump.

Yesterday I checked the fuel filter and the lift pump again to make sure that neither f these had a problem, and after I did so heard what sounded like fuel flowing back to the tank.

When the AA engineer diagnosed the lift pump originally, he noticed a large hole in the tank next to the fuel guage/feed pipe insert on the top of the tank.
He suggested this should have a grommet in it to stop water getting in to the tank (it's a tipper back truck so water can get to the top of the tank when it rains.) He temporarily taped it over.

From your comment about the blocked vent I wonder if this could be the problem!!!
