i purchased a landrover freelander from a private person - and i have had nothing but problems with is - i purchased it in october 2008 (6 months ago and its been off the road for most of that time with engine problems - the head gasket went, and i had problems with the cam shaft pulley which had been damaged because someone had drilled out the hole in it and this made the repair more complicated - the pulley had to be swapped over so that the damaged holes were not used. following an oil change after the head gasket was replaced we noticed a lot of noise coming from the crankshaft. I have now had to replace that and the bearings and the shells - i contacted landrover and they told me that the cheapest and easiest repair was to replace the whole engine - that would have cost me between £3000 and £4000 - they have to be joking........ the brake shoes needed to be replaced and ive not even done 100 miles in the car since ive had it. the drivers side speaker fell off the door about 3 days after i had it. I also noticed a label on the windscreen that showed that when terrain vehicles serviced the car in 2007 it had done 78000 miles - the clock in the car hasnt even got to 78000 yet and it now 2009 (2 years later). I contacted trading standards and they told me to write to the guy that I purchased the car from and tell what problems that id had, and was still having with the car. He obviously wrote back to say that while he had the car so i got in touch with trading standards and they told me that there was nothing they could do to help me. so now im stuck - this work has so far cost me more than £1100 and its still off the road and ive still got more bits to buy - I paid nearly £2000 for the car its only a 2000 W reg and i would like to know if anyone can advise me if there is any way that i can claim recompense from the previous owner or landrover as the problems that i have had are a design fault.

Cags .Any problem you had with someone drilling out a camshaft pulley is not LandRovers concern . Likewise brake shoes are wear and tear items and at 78k miles you would have no cause for complaint if you needed to replace them . Unfortunately seeing as the car is almost 10 yrs old you will get no goodwill contribution from Land Rover also for any headgasket failure ....sorry to be the bearer of bad news . Speakers falling off arent a common problem to be honest , so again seeing as the cars is nearly 10 yrs old anything could have happened to them in the past . It seems all you can do is speak the previous owner and aire your concerns with him.

Cags.Your story is an example of why my advise has always stayed the same when purchasing these vehicles . You need to ensure of good service history , when looking at the vehicle you need to take someone with you that knows these vehicles inside out , if possible buy from a dealer where you will have a degree of comeback , and most importantly buy a decent warranty . If your purchasing one one these and something seems to good to be true then it probably is !!

i did take a mechanic with me to buy the car and he took it for a test drive - other than taking the engine apart there is no way that i am aware of to tell if the head gasket or the big end has problems - i also paid a fair price for what i thought was a well maintained car, i am aware that you dont get something for nothing in this world but 2 grand for a 9 year old car seemed reasonable.I dont see that there is anything else that i could have done to protect myself - if the only option is to buy from a dealer and pay their inflated prices so that you have a come back if there are problems, then i think will have to keep this blooming car till the wheels fall off considering the money i have spent on parts and labour.....

Cags. There are ways of telling any impending failure but they may not have been evident when the vehicle was checked over by your mechanic . With regards to your comments regarding main dealer prices .... may i politely suggest that if you did consider purchasing from a main dealer you may have paid £1000 more , but then you probably wouldnt be on here now asking advice , and probably would not be out of pocket .

Very unusual to get a problem with a crankshaft in one of these engines unless it had been very badly overheated.
